I've got a game coming up Thursday that requires a lot of rifle pits (hasty works). I've made some but needed more. I went on a tour of the Golden Paint factory in New Berlin, NY a couple weekends back with my wife, who uses their products extensively for her paintings. There I saw a sample of Golden's Extra Coarse Pumice Gel and purchased an 8 oz. container. I built these using matte board as bases and a couple layers of the gel, with some scale basswood lumber. A variety of brown paint, dark washes and lighter dry brushes produced the following, with some 15mm Texans posing in some of the photos.
If I had it to do over, I'd make matte board terraces, wedding cake style and then a single layer of the gel over that before painting. When I get my latest batch of figures done I'm going to use the pumice gel on their bases.
I started some time back using Golden's light molding paste, then switched to coarse molding paste and now the extra coarse pumice gel. I guess you can say I've graduated to the harder stuff. |

Looks like you could also use wooden craft sticks. Interesting concept which I will plan on borrowing. Jim |

I have used Golden's Extra Coarse Pumice Gel for many years, mostly for my figure bases and sometimes for the surface coating of redoubts and misc terrain. I suggest mixing acrylic paint into the gel, which will prevent the the dreaded white exposure from cracks. Although I have never known the gel to crack…it is quite flexible when hard. |

This further advice from the materials specialist at Golden: The Clear Granular Gel mixed with Black Gesso makes a really nice asphalt. Same gel with Fluid Carbon Black makes a good pile of coal. Coarse Pumice mixed with various greens results in lawns and mounded up can make for good shrubs and whatnot. Gloss Gel "skins" can be cut into window shapes for small windows. And many acrylic products are easy to cut/carve with Xacto knives and other carving tools. |
