Well it has been thirty days since I arrived in Dallas, Texas to start the new job. I do feel like I have moved to another country. There is nothing in my experience that is like Texas. Today I had the opportunity to war game at the famous(infamous) Rat's Palace. A nice war game Man's Cave down in Red Oak, Texas with a wonderful host. We had a fun game of Bolt Action and found my fellow gamers of like mind. In other words if it is not fun why do it? We had fun and I have made some new friends. I am looking forward to some future war game mayhem as time and scheduling allow. Today went a long way toward easing my homesickness.

On other topics, Dallas continues to be hot although the locals are talking about how nice the temperature is. Who are these people. Low nineties in late September is NOT a nice temperature!

Texas has great beer.

Texas has great food of all kinds and yes brisket can now be considered Barbecue. I will yield to that.

This coming week I will at some point experience the Texas State Fair. I understand it is a culinary cultural extravaganza and a gastronomic nightmare.

Texans put peppers in everything including Ketchup.

Speaking of Ketchup, Whataburger ROCKS!

I miss Texas – if you secede again I'll move.

45thdiv27 Sep 2015 4:46 a.m. PST

I miss Whataburger!

Kim, your blood will thin after a year and next year you will be saying how nice the weather is too. :)

I'm glad to hear you have found a group of like mined players.

Do you like the Job?

The state fair is huge. You should try to find a good swap meet. They are not like the ones in NC, it is just an open field with tables where people are selling the stuff cheap.

If you get up to Denton, feel free to stop by.

90 in September is not hot. 107 at 7:30 AM (and 7:30 PM) in August is hot. Wait until it is low 90's in October.

Glad to here that you found the Rat Palace. Hopefully I will see you there soon. Also Millennium Con in Austin is coming first week of Nov. Many in the DFW area make the trek.

stormspear27 Sep 2015 7:08 a.m. PST

well you know around Dallas and Houston there are only 2 seasons fall and hell you will get used to it

kallman27 Sep 2015 7:50 a.m. PST

Virtual I plan to make it to Denton soon. I will give you a shout out.

@45thdiv, Matthew, love the job! The schedule is way crazy at the moment but I hope to be able to get things to be less chaotic once I can get an additional person hired and another staff member returns from helping another branch that was short handed. I have a great team of people with extensive knowledge and passion for the job we do. That makes my work easier and allows me to focus on short term and long term planning.

I will be running games of Lion Rampant at the upcoming Millennium Con in Round Rock, Texas in November. It will be my first foray out of the Dallas area so I will get to see a small part of the rest of the state.

By the way did you know that you could fit the entirety of Europe into Texas? Let that sink in.

Not all of Europe, but close:

kallman, have you tried the spicy ketchup at Whataburger?

VonBlucher27 Sep 2015 8:46 a.m. PST

Having a daughter who is an Army Officer, who has been stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Fort Hood, and Fort Bliss now. I rather enjoy our yearly trips down to visit her and enjoy my time in Texas (I definitely could retire here). I have to admit though not as much fun in El Paso, compared to the I35 corridor of Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio though.

kalman, if you haven't tried one yet (the franchise is nationwide now) you should also indulge in a Schlotzky's "Deluxe Original" sandwich. It's a Texan cousin of New Orleans' muffaletta created in Austin in 1971.

kallman27 Sep 2015 9:39 a.m. PST

@Desertscrb, YES! Love the spicy Whataburger ketchup. Nice heat to that with your fires.

@Spurious, one of the things that my buddy Nazrat was glad to see was that Scholtzky's was in Dallas. We made one trip there while he was still in Dallas after helping me with the move and the drive down. Schlotzky's did not succeed in Charlotte which was strange as it one of the best sandwich places I have eaten at that is a chain.

Of course I now have a love for tacos, Texas style. Torchies' Tacos are amazing. However with all the food choices I have lost five pounds since arriving. Part of that is watching the budget and NOT eating out a lot, and the other is I now walk a lot from the DART station to my place of work downtown. It is a good six city blocks of hiking and the way back to the rail station is a good up ward incline. And I just found out as a city employee and with City Hall right across the street from the central library where I work there is a gym in city hall that is only five dollars a month for city employees. My lunch breaks will now include a bit of a workout.

SpuriousMilius27 Sep 2015 12:33 p.m. PST

Welcome to the DFW Metroplex & keep up your good work (& your workout). As you said in your opening post, I always have sliced jalapenos added to my Schlotzkys & to my Whataburgers.

45thdiv27 Sep 2015 5:00 p.m. PST

Schlotzkys started in the midwest / southwest I think. When I was at the university of Oklahoma in the mid 1980's we use to eat there a lot.

I was telling my friends about it when I moved to northern Virginia and they thought I was making up the name. No one would name a sandwich shop that. They opened one in DC in 1998 and I was so happy. It was the first time I could really say, "I told you so." With actual proof. I have no idea if it is still there or not.

I am glad you are enjoying the new job. Makes the trip out there worth it.

Cowboys lost … hehehehe

kallman28 Sep 2015 11:44 a.m. PST

Well I have been informed if I become a Cowboy fan that I will be disowned by my Panthers friends back in Charlotte. Since I currently do not have a TVhjoked up and really do not follow American football it is not an issue.

wrgmr128 Sep 2015 3:56 p.m. PST

Guess the same goes for hockey? Dallas Stars?

There can't be room in Texas for Europe. It's already crowded with the United States in the north part of the state. At least, that's what they said when I had the misfortune to live there a very long time ago. You can have Texas, all of it. Never missed it for a pico-second. But glad to here you're hooking up with some gamers.
