"In 1995 and 1996, Taiwanese politicians signaled greater support for declaring their island country officially independent of China. Beijing's response was swift, forceful … and ultimately an embarrassment to China. The Chinese army fired several missiles toward small, Taiwanese-held islands.

That's when the United States intervened in a big way, sending two entire aircraft carrier battle groups into the waters around Taiwan — and even sailing one carrier through the Taiwan Strait.

The Chinese military was powerless against this show of force. Beijing couldn't even reliably track the American warships, and had no forces of its own capable of threatening the powerful U.S. vessels…"

Attempt does not equal effective shot.

Not to mention that carriers normally steam pretty fast, 15-20 knots. Tough for even a nuc sub to get ahead of a carrier.

Countermeasures vs. "cueing" = no shot at a U.S. Carrier. Chinese cueing uncontested yes a problem, but the U.S can and would mitigate each layer very quickly. Granted Chinese advances a drawing closer to parity, but only limited parity and short in duration. Chinese aggression would have a very critical timetable and a narrow window of success. Any misstep would lead to disaster for the PLAN.

The Chinese submarine crews are still hapless and spend *shockingly* little time at sea. Even with the tremendous changes happening to the Chinese military culture at the moment (huge reductions in the number of officers moving towards a professional NCO class), it will be a decade before modern submarine operations will be really competent.

The Chinese have had whole crews drown during training at DOCKSIDE (though I can't find the reference at the moment). Recently a Chinese sub had a problem, the captain and crew managed to get the sub home, and they all got medals as a result. They are not ready for primetime, though they will be an issue in a decade or so.
