About 15 years ago I bought my first 20mm figures at Cold Wars one of my first conventions and my beginning to wargaming. The figures were already painted Waffen SS but I have no idea who makes them. So who were the big manufacturers of 20mm back then. I ask because I just found them and want to add to them. |

Possibly FAA. A photo would probably attract the expert figure spotters… |

FAA and SHQ were my faves back then. |

I wish I could post photos but I can't |

FAA were definitely my go-to range back then. Some description might narrow it down – slender / medium / chunky build? Realistic or caricatured expressions? |

War Squad have been around for awhile as well. Chunky, big hands, caricature faces. One particular figure is a grenadier unscrewing a stick grenade up by his helmet. |

Slender with lots of detail a very crisp set of figures |

Slender back then definitely makes me think SHQ…. FAA were more a middling build, Britannia and Platoon 20 both chunky. |

Battlefield Miniatures (Drew's Militia)! But I got my AB minis a long time ago too, and IMO, they are still as good as any around, no matter the scale. |

Oh yes, could be Drew's Militia. AB's 20mm range isn't as old as that though, I think. |

Most of the big ones have already been named. There was also Raventhorpe! (They were a little soft on detail, however, so I doubt it was them. Still great figures in my opinion.) |

I can't find any pictures of AB |

Most likely SHQ, especially the details. |

And very nice they were. I still have a platoon of your Russians despite having sold most of my 20mm. I agree with Dom (God I hate saying that! ;-P) sounds like SHQ to me. link Fatman |

I bought my first AB figures in 2004 and they had probably been in production before that. AB pictures here: link |

Combat Miniatures? (believe it was a line backed by Todd Fisher?) |

I'm thinking SHQ – do some of them have very upright poses with one leg bent? That's a classic, if awkward in my opinion, SHQ pose |

Thanks everyone you have given me a good start for my search. |

And yes several have a bent leg running pose. |

None of them – scale creep came in much later….. |
