Nice short movie, but not sure that they are napoleonic hussars, mainly cavalrymen from the 1848 rising!

Some of them are dressed Napoleonic … Some look 1860s too.
I think its just a get together of different hussar groups.

Just imagine the investment required to rig out that officer of hussars, in 21st Century. Mind you, try funding feeding, upkeep and transport of a thoroughbred horse in UK nowadays!

No, those are hussars from the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. The actual uniforms hadn't changed much from the Napoleonic wars, but some of the uniforms are strictly from the Hungarian war. [The light blue uniform in the line of hussars, for instance.]
One of the reasons you only see Hussars in the film is that ALL the Hungarian cavalry were hussars… some 12,000 cavalry.

You can tell it is from the Hungarian Revolution because the Hussars are fighting the White-clad Austrians, using their traditional rope 'whip' to bring down some soldiers and the flags they are carrying are from the Hungarian army during the war.

The Hungarian Revolution is still a big deal for the Hungarians. Many still refuse to drink beer in memory of the Austrians toasting each other with beer for each execution of Hungarian officers.

I am probably the only one who thought the only Hungarian Rising was a century later. Many a revolution in 1848, but that was one I missed out on.

Right, off to Wiki to find out how they got on. I can only presume the outcome was unfavourable for these chaps, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire seemed to still feature up until 1918!

I remain convinced that this is the forum to post those Hussars… no matter which era they belongs… (smile)

It is amazing that the Hungarian Revolution has been missed. It lasted a year and a half. The Hungarians were winning, which induced the Italians to attack twice, one in each year, so Austria begged Russia to intervene. They did, with 200,000 men.

The Hungarian Revolution [1848-49] easily occupied one million combatants, more than The Crimean and 1859 wars combined, yet no one has heard of it…primarly because the Austrians were so draconian about suppressing the events and no one seems to speak Magar outside of Hungary…. A fascinating war and BIG too.
