The University of Northampton has become one of only four institutions in Europe to offer a master's degree in Serious Games.

The University of Northampton has launched a new master's degree in Serious Games, focusing on games used for training or education…

Given how big gaming in its various forms has become as a business, focusing on gaming in graduate school seems reasonable.

There are any number of B.A.s in Simulation and/or game design. M.I.T. has a B.A. and Masters in simulation and game design. One of the basic textbooks published by M.I.T. press is:

Katie Salen & Eric Zimmerman

Rules of Play: Game Design Fundamentals

And no, it covers every facet of game design including wargames, not simply computer game dsign.

So, are craps, strip-poker, jacks, and beer-pong in, or out?

What about Silly Games?

Chapter Eight. Chapter Nine is inane and insane games. e.g.
tick-tack-toe, solitaire poker, craps, strip-poker, jacks, and beer-pong in, or out? etc.

The boiler sheet on the website seems to be more about programming than games. And the games part seems to left up to a research project (= teach yourself). Reading between the lines, the risk might be that little will be taught about games design and learning. (I've seen these sort of courses before.) However it may be a stepping stone to a job.

If you want learn about design theory (mental models, fun, design, task performance), a Human-Computer Interaction Masters on an IT degree is a better path. That could lead into really serious fields like aviation, defence, product development, business intelligence etc.

Keep in mind (long term) that a degree like this will justify you going to the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC), held in Orlando, FL the first week of December. Not only is it interesting, but Orlando in December is a lot better place to be than many places I've lived (Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming come to mind).

Well, I can't speak to the whole game design situation but I can tell you, I remember it getting damn cold in Orlando in January when I went to boot camp at the naval training center there – back when smilodons still roamed.

I can recommend the conference, wherever it's held. The cross-fertilization, finding the commonalities between different kinds of simulations and applications is always 'educational.'

The cross-over between 'serious' simulation and simulation games and the entertainment industry, principaly the fifty billion dollar computer game market is a real motivation for the degrees. Another is the huge boom in research, training and management simulations.
