Wondering if this will hook me into the period as quickly as his Genghis Khan series… link |

I think second book is much better than the first, so don't be disheartened |

Read Gates of Rome and thought that it was garabage. Subsequently gave up on him. |

Read Stormbird – utter drivel. Shan't bother with any more of them. |

Read the first two and have the third. I actually liked the first book better than the second. Perhaps because I was not as familiar with the events depicted in the book. Like them. |

met him, told him face to face that I found his writing style tired and cliché, but he did manage to pick interesting bits of history to write about, and did admit in the authors notes that he had made changes for the sake of drama.. Have got the first two books of the wars of roses series, not read yet. |

"The Sunne in Splendour" by Sharon Kay Pennman is pretty good. |

I've really enjoyed his War of the roses books and have bought his new one today, but then I have them as talking books so it's not an effort and makes driving a pleasure. I got half way through his Genghis Khan series and gave up, everyone has their own opinion. |

"met him, told him face to face that I found his writing style tired and cliché, but he did manage to pick interesting bits of history to write about" I bet he appreciated that. |

Well, if I was an international best-selling author of historical fiction and some non-entity in Waterstones said something like that, I don't think it would even register on my "give a o-meter". |
Winston Smith | 26 Sep 2015 9:55 a.m. PST |
Usually it's the snotty author who goes out of his way to insult the reader. At least that has been my experience. |

Stormbird had no hook for me. It actually seemed like a 'chick' medieval novel. Lots of character build and very little action, perhaps because it centred upon Margaret of Anjou's formative years and the pre-WOTR era, it was very heavy going for me. Didn't finish it through sheer lack of interest. |

just like Bernard Cornwell, despite the flood of criticism he will be laughing all the way to the bank! |
