Sir Marmaduke Rawdon was famous for his defence of Basing House and later Faringdon House, both being Royalist strongholds during the English Civil War. This is my attempt to model his Regiment of Foot and is inspired by the Sealed Knot's re-enactment regiment. The figures are mostly Old Glory with a few figures from Front Rank and Foundry added to the mix, the flag is of course from my own range of ECW flags. This may be opening a can of worms, How come the SK's Sir Marmaduke Rawdon's are Yellow coats and the ECWS's are Red coats? |

That is a very good question to which I don't have the answer. I have painted another version of Rawdon's regiment in a rusty red colour jackets for someone else last year and they look like this:

According to the ECWS site Rawdon commanded the Red Regiment of the London Trained bands but fled to Oxford at the opening of the war. Maybe that's why that group chose red? Given apparently no specific knowledge I like the "Yellow Jackets" – much cooler and bad-ass looking! |

As an SK Rawdon at the time of the change to yellow coats (from grey)I can shed some light on this. There was no information about what colour coat was worn historically so we had a discussion as to what colour we would use. It was felt as there were several grey regiments about and we wanted to stand out we voted on yellow (some people did not agree and left). It worked as when we turned up at Himley Hall (first muster in yellow) it caused quite a stir especially as we turned out about 50 or 60 pike and shot. |

Well, as a ECWS Rawdon we wear red as Sir Marmaduke Rawdon bought a large amount of red cloth before leaving London for Oxford. |

Greetings all, For my other hobby, I run the Sir Marmaduke Rawdon's Regiment of Foote (ECWS) for my sins. There is no first hand account of what uniform (if any)would have been worn by Rawdon's Regiment apart from a comment by Sir Henry Gage who relieved Basing House where he commented that the garrison looked less like soldiers and more like the inhabitants of a graveyard – so not very encouraging. Marmaduke Rawdon was given his commission to raise a regiment in April 1643 at Oxford which was sent to Basing House in Hampshire by August (an advance guard under Sir Robert Peake arrived at Basing at the end of July). So, the regiment was probably still in or around Oxford when the famous Thomas Bushell refit of Red and Blue suits for the Foote took place, So Rawdon's may have acquired red coats from there. Or blue coats. Or none at all. Rawdon had been Lieut-Colonel of the Red Regiment of Trayned Bandes before joining the King, but the 'red' refers to the Colours (Flags) rather than coats. Personally, I think Rawdon's Regiment is most likely to have been un-uniformed. Even if a Kit issue had been made when they left Oxford, I think that once at Basing House they would have to make do with whatever clothing they could get their hands on. |

This is all very fascinating and most welcome information. Do both regiments use the same flag colour? When I first made Rawdon's flag I used the Sealed Knot version which was black with white arrow head devices, but quickly changed this to black with white plate devices after discussion with various fellows on the Warlord Games Forum. |

ECWS Rawdon's fly Red Colours. As with the 'uniforms', there is very little to go on, but there is an account I think of Rawdon's Cavalry Troop (yes, he did have one!) flying a red troop guidon. There are accounts of a Black Colour flying at Basing House, but I don't think it is tied to one particular regiment. It makes sense for the SK Rawdons to fly Black Colours as at least there is some mention of them, but in ECWS they are already flown by the Marquis of Winchester's Regiment who represent of course the other regiment of the Basing House garrison. I believe the devices used on the M of W's Colours are taken from the Marquis' family crest (three swords or daggers) and the family motto of 'Aimez Loyaute' |
