Hi guys. I just picked up some italeri french to start a new project. I am looking for adviceon basing amounts for figures. |

Go for a standard 1:20 ratio – gives an idealised battalion of 36 figures, 6 grenadiers, 6 voltigeurs and 24 line. I use 15mm frontages, 20mm deep per figure, which is "old fashioned" 25mm figure basing from the days gone by. You can go smaller, but I like the bases it gives me (ie 45mm by 40mm bases for each 6 figure company). The alternative is to go under strength, and go for, say, 32 figures, on 4 bases of 8 figures (sorry, all these are double ranked – BP is rather old school in intent from what I can see). It makes the elites harderto sort, but not end of the world. BP is pretty relaxed, so as long as mots of your units are "standard sized" and fit against each other it seems to work out ok |

I think I'm going to try 2 wide by 2 deep 40x40 |

Give it a try. My heart tells me you may find 20mm frontage too wide for 1/72 – mine look spaced out in 15mm frontages, and I know that they could go smaller (maybe 12.5mm – 10mm would probably be too small) But try it and see if YOU like it – they are your figures. Depth is good though, as it means you can place the front rank back from the front edge to protect bayonets etc. If you have an email I can send you some pics of mine |

Oh, but cavalry work well on 20mm by 40mm – I tend to go three to base, two bases to a squadron, 24 figures to a regiment. But again, get some and stick them on a bit of card and see what works. I only did mine these sizes as they come from the old Peter Gilder times |

I'm going 4 or 5 figs across on a 60mm frontage, so actually smaller than 15mm. 12 I think. It really looks like a wall of cramped activity, and it confuses the eye so that limited poses don't impact the overall effect. Loving the 1/72s so far. |

I just really like the affordability. I'm thinking 40 man regiments to start. |

Yes, affordability is a big part of it. But once you get into them, you start looking at 28mm and thinking "what the heck are those pumpkin heads etc", and nevr look back |

not gonna happen. i love my 28mm too much. :P |
