A troop would contain either 3 or 4 of the same type. At this time, squadrons could have more than one type. For example, 7th Arm Div October 1942 at the start of Alamein per Bevis vol. 3:
1RTR – Two sqdns Grant (3x troops of 3 plus HQ of 3); One sqdn Stuart (2 x troops of 3 plus HQ of 4)
6RTR – Two Grant sqdns as 1RTR; One sqdn Crusader II (3x troops of 3 plus HQ of 2x Crusader II and 2x Crusader IICS)
4CLR – Two Crusader sqdns (each 2x troops of 3x Crusader II, 1x troop of 3x Crusader III, plus HQ of 2x Crusader II and 1x Crusader III); One sqdn Grants (2 troops of 3 plus HQ of 3, so 9 tanks in total).
Each Regt also had a recce troop of approximately 7x Daimler I scout cars.
Other armoured divs were equipped differently. I have the other volumes of Bevis and can see what they say if you have a specific division or regiment in mind.
