I'd imagine the shield pikes would last seconds against a pare of side cutters.

Nice model: too many tusks for my (LotR) tastes but very well sculpted all the same.

Well, if you're using great war mammoths, perhaps your fighting giants, or enemies on dinosaurs so shield spikes help to keep your prestige battle platform being grappled or bitten.

Just because an element is fanciful does not make it necessarily unrealistic.

The spikes might be intended to work like these, to dissuade enemy infantry from getting too close:

Their leaders and senior officers all rode on elephants, and the elephants all wore armour. On their backs they carried fighting towers that resembled screens, and bamboo tubes hung down both sides, with short spears in them to prevent thrusts from the side.

- which are Shan elephants in Yunnan in 1388.

so, they can make metal armour for the beast, but the howdah looks like it was made from wood washed up on the shore….
