Why cant I find Pennant Numbers for WW2 German Ships ? Did they not have them like the Allies did or am I looking in the wrong place.
Looking for the numbers for

Graff Spee
Bismarck
Prinz Eugen
Admiral Hipper
Lutzow

I know what class they are but not the pennant or ship number.
please help

Worse than that, apparently neither Germany nor Imperial Japan used ship prefixes. IJN and KM(or DKM) were generated and used by the allies.

Also, you might try proving me wrong by finding 'hull numbers' for German ships. Only ones I can find are the ones applied by the Allies after taking ownership.

I don't think the capital ships had hull numbers – they certainly weren't painted on the ship if they did. I can only recall seeing painted numbers on destroyers and smaller.

The only surface ships that used numbers were flotilla craft; destroyers, torpedo boats, submarines etc. Early in the war destroyers had a two digit number painted on the hull. The first was the Flotilla number the second the sequence number within the flotilla. Hence Z5, Paul Jacobi, carried 21 as she was the senior ship of the Second Flotilla.
As far as I can remember these were not used after the Norwegain campaign of 1940.
