"A battle is brewing in Washington over the military's push to open all combat units to women. The Marine Corps is reportedly poised to ask that some positions remain available only to men, following a nine-month study that found units with all genders did not perform as well in combat. The issue is stirring a passionate debate in the military community, pitting the Marine Corps against its own service secretary and creating a bitter divide on the House Armed Services Committee. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who is the service secretary for the Marine Corps, blasted the study of the Marine units as biased and said he plans to open all jobs to women…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

…cooler, more logical, less PC minds will prevail… HA! Remember, you are talking about Washington here. An effective military is the LAST thing most of them are worried about. |

I hear all the time about women lacking the strength to do the job and in many cases this is valid. However, I think just as important will be the emotional impact. It's hard on guys seeing their friends die but watching a woman getting blown up or shot will be even harder. We wore the uniform to protect them not watch them die around us. |

As was noted in the discussion of this at NRO, if all 'jobs' in the military are opened to women, then Selective Service registration should include them as well. Would be interesting to see how registering for the Draft impacted the view among young women (and their parents) on women in combat. Interesting choice of words there – 'jobs.' Says something about worldview. Wonder if that is a quote from the Secretary or a rephrase by the reporter… |

We (UK) ran a trial in 2001 involving an experimental mixed infantry unit. It was described as "so unrealistic they amounted to aggressive camping". |

interesting thing is going to see how "Fighting Joe" Dunford is going to handle this. Moving from CMC to Chairman Joint Chief of Staff, he will have to weigh in on his own recommendation as Commandant from his new position as Chairman. Even for a man who rose from Brigadier( 1 Star) to the rank of General( 4 Star) in only three years, it is going to be a challenge. |

I suspect they and others should be careful what they wish for. Somehow, I doubt this is going to end well, and military effectiveness will suffer, but that's a minor concern in the whole scheme of things, right? |

They don't … almost all combat units are male. Females generally are in combat support and service support roles … link These are essentially identical to the terms of service for male combat soldiers.[3] Each year, 1,500 female combat soldiers are drafted into the IDF.[6] Women currently make up 3% of the IDF's combat soldiers.[8] Women were not employed in combat roles until 2000, when the Caracal Battalion was raised. In 2014, the IDF appointed Major Oshrat Bacher as Israel's first female combat battalion commander.[21] A combat option for women is the Caracal Battalion, which is a highly operational force that is made up of 70 percent female soldiers.[5] The unit undergoes training like any combat infantry.[6] The IDF commando K9 unit, Oketz, also drafts females as combat soldiers.[8] |

I've wondered what would it be like if in Somalia in a Black Hawk Down scenario if the helo pilot was a woman, or see a woman in a Lone Survivor. |

We get the same <bleep> spewed by ignorant politicians, and media talking heads, here. It's all about votes- risking soldiers' lives and the effectiveness of the ADF is hardly a consideration when votes are a dim possibility- and selling media ad space via controversy. It would be simple for the USMC to get your Navy Secretary to understand what he's asking. Get him to do a 14 day platoon fighting patrol in terrain similar to the Thai-Malay border- during the wet season. No dustoff, no re-sup's, no rest days, just 14 days of patrolling with all rat's, 2 X front line ammo' and rest of their gear on their backs, with a 50-50 mix of male and female soldiers in the platoon. And then he can personally witness and approve the injuries claims when they come out of the ulu, and see what the gender spread is. Not that he's likely to do that. They didn't listen when I suggested the Al Muthanna TG use pollies and reporters as improvised armour, either. In fact I get a good kick in the behind for suggesting it. Dal. |
