Are there any books in English that cover the French operations in W.W. I? I've read they did some of the fighting (that's a joke), but can't find any accounts other than about Verdun. I've read a bunch on Verdun, more interested in events in other areas and time periods ('15, '16, '17 or '18). Thank you in advance. |

"Paths of Glory: The French Army 1914-18" by Clayton is a good overall summary. |

Zuber, "The Battle of the Frontiers – Ardennes 1914" Watt, "Dare Call It Treason" [mutinies of 1917] Doughty, "Pyrrhic Victory" [French strategy and operations] |

The French Army and the First World War by Elizabeth Greenhalgh – is a great look at how the army began the war then evolved as it went along. She gets into how the previous wars and mindsets permeated strategy and tactics of the army. Unfortunately, it took hundreds of thousands of casualties to force the French army to change. Well written and an engaging read. Poilu by Louis Barthas is a grunt's eye view of the war and how it was fought at the company, platoon and squad level. Louis pulls no punches and you fully understand why the French army mutinied in 1917. Once you read Poilu, you will wonder how they managed to wait that long! Larry |

Clayton, Watt, Doughty and Barthas are all interesting and readable. Zuber is interesting but not as easy to read. Infantry in Battle, edited by George Marshall has some interesting chapters involving the French Army and is free online. |

Infantry in Battle has some case studies of French combats. Some good 1914 stuff. Depends on how high up the command chain you want to climb |

Has anyone read "They Shall Not Pass" by Sumner? |
