… works on an A-10 attack jet.

"Modern ground combat is a mess of factors that result in an overwhelming amount of friction. People are trying to kill one another, communication can be near impossible and separating civilians from the enemy is a herculean task.

Above this chaos might be an aircraft, loaded wingtip to wingtip with thousands of pounds of bombs, waiting to relieve some of that friction on the ground. The act of coordinating this event is called Close Air Support (CAS). Pronounced "Kass," it is difficult in even the most controlled situations…"

Finally. This is the sort of stuff I've been advocating for CAS since I learned how we process Joint Tactical Air Requests in 2011. We've got digital CAS already through stuff like AFATDS but this communicates more information through an easier interface. It's a DARPA project but how long to reach JTACs and aircraft in the field?

It also shows why the A-10 Bleeped text is so overrated: more and more CAS is dropping precision munitions, something which the A-10 doesn't do any better than most other aircraft.

Payload, hangtime (re: demonstrated time and again survivability), and that freaking intimidation-factor cannon…

It may not be the panacea you are hoping for, but the A-10 is not overrated.

A-10 "I'm so glad they are on my side"

Payload

The A-10's payload 16,000lbs. The F-35A and C are both 18,000lbs max payload. The F-35B is 15,000lbs. Assuming the F-35's ever get certified to drop actual bombs….but I digress…

Super Hornets are 17,750lbs. The F-15 Strike Eagle craps on them all @ 23,000lbs. So no payload advantage for the A-10.

demonstrated time and again survivability

Against obsolete SAMs or SAF in a COIN environment, sure. In a high-intensity conflict against modern SAM systems, its flight envelope is a liability not overcome by its airframe ruggedness.

and that freaking intimidation-factor cannon

I've never been passed a Joint Tactical Air Request form that had blocks 5 and 6 filled out "ASAP/Intimidate". Flying multi-million dollar manned aircraft into harm's way to soil the enemy's underwear is beyond wasteful, and relies on the assumption the enemy is poorly trained and poorly equipped enough for the intimidation to work at all.

Also tops the list for number of CAS missions flown. Not to mention that I'd bet the A10s also get called in for riskier drops, because they're supposed to be experts at it.

Hell, the observers and media at the Hogsmoke competitions are 200 yards from the gun targets!
