Apparently the Cold War bug has bitten the US Army. Here's a nice set of recently released books on the subject. They are all free PDFs. From Folda to Kuwait PDF link The US Army Before Vietnam PDF link Forging the Shield: The US Army in Europe 1951-1962 PDF link I get the impression that Forging the Shield could be a series that covers the Cold War from start to finish. I just found these books today so I'm still pouring through them myself. I'm trying to find a TO&E for the 1st ID Forward and the Sheridan era ACRs. I did find out from here the the 1st ID Forward had been using the M60A1 up until 1983 when they received the M60A3 TTS! Pretty awesome for me because I bought a slew of these on a hunch. link Cool stuff! By the way, would M60 and M113 battalions have used M3s in their recon platoons? By 1985? Or would they have M113s, M901s, and M60s in those platoons |

That's should be "Fulda" not Folda. I spent 3 years there! And loved it! |

I recall reading that the M3 CFV did equip many M113 mech battalions in Europe, often long before those units got M2 Bradley IFV. |

Wasn't that the case in Team Yankee Ty? IIRC, the mech battalion was 113 based but they had a six M3 scout platoon. |

Makes senses on the Bradleys, I suspect. I also recall reading that the Armored Cav. units got priority for the M1 Abrams tanks too, since they were patrolling the inter-German border. |

I was in E 2/2 ACR 83-86. If my memory serves me, we got our M-1's sometime in 85 and when I left late 86(December) we were scheduled to get our Bradleys in early 87. I recall plenty of other units already in M-2/3. And later as a Bradley transition instructor we did whole Bn's at the same time so I would assume they did the same a few years earlier. Jim |
