I know a lot of us have been watching Jack playing with his 6mm toys and having a ball, and maybe wishing we had our forces up to speed. That's me for sure!

So I have to ask, what forces do you have waiting to get painted up to join your battle groups for some Cold War/Hot gaming? And, while you're at it, what period are you shooting for??

Me personally I'm shooting for a blind of the real world with a nice mix of Sir John's WWIII forces for good measure. My date will be August 1985!

So right now I have:

USA

I wish I had a master plan, but honestly I'm picking up the "oh shiney" things I see on Ebay. I'll probably model the 11th ACR as shown by Sir John, but the main force will be my old outfit: 1st ID. You just HAVE to field the Big Red One if you're doing the US Army (got that Jack???). So my force will probably serve as a ACAV troop and as a part of a mechanized/armored company team with a focus on the retro side of 1985.

16 M551 Sheridans (for my armored cav- I'm going to pretend with Sir John that the Sheridans were decent vehicles!)

10 M60 A3s. I love the dinosaur so it's going to be my MBT.

10 M113s (kind of weak, but I'm getting more sooner or later)

2 M163 AAAs (gotta have that top cover)

2 M106s (mortars for support and when I form ACAV platoons)

2 Packs of US infantry (individual rifles and weapons troops- gotta have grunts)

12 M2 or M3 Brads. I've had these guys for a while but they're in a box somewhere. I might dig them out to fill out my mech infantry and slip them in for battalion cavalry platoons.

1 M577. Have to have a TOC!

On order: 5 M1 Abrams. Hey, I'm an old IP dude, so I've got to have my war pigs! 2 AH-1 Cobras… gotta love the retro Snakes.

Soviet

So I'm a little better organized here! But still, no real master plan than a vague "I'm collecting a Soviet mechanized force". But if I had to fit them into a niche then they are part of a Soviet tank division. The BMPs see to that.

10 T-72M1 MBTs. Hey, again, I'm working with Sir John here.

16 BMP-1. That ties me with the tank division idea.

12 T-62 MBTs. So I found this deal on Ebay that I couldn't refuse!
Maybe they're East German or a second line tank division.

3 T-74 MBTs. Was there really such a thing? I guess they'll just be another T-72 tank platoon.

2 BTR-80s. Okay, they came with my T62s so I'm stuck with them. I guess they will be the start of an ultra-modern force or a late Cold War force if I ever get around to it.

2 packs of individual Soviet infantry… I ordered them from Warweb, so I'm not really in a rush to get them, right?

I might get one of these to round things out:

link

And so I can have a few infantry to tied me over until the Warweb troopies show up.

Buried deep in a box I have a company of Challenger Is and Warriors that might come out to play one day. But I would rather have Chieftains and FV 432s though!

I plan to base all of my toys on old Flames of War small bases. I prefer mounting my vehicles rather than leaving them loose. But I will probably go with pennies for my grunts.

So how about you? What's in your battlegroup??

Tgunner18 Sep 2015 5:00 p.m. PST

Sorry navy types… the site glitched on me and dumped me here. Oh well, anchors away and all that. Maybe someone is collecting Marines???

Mako1118 Sep 2015 5:06 p.m. PST

Hmmm, haven't looked in a while, but a mix of 6mm Americans, British, and West Germans, to oppose the Soviets/W.P..

A mix of early, mid, and late Cold War types.

A few are even painted, but most are not, sadly.

Some of the plastic, pre-paints for both sides, in 1/144th. Mainly tanks, since that's what's available, plus a few IFVs and some unpainted troops too. Americans, Soviets, and West Germans. Need some of those beautiful Chieftains.

In 15mm, a lot of Bundeswehr, a few Americans (US Armored Cav – M551s), and some PT-76s, and a pair of Hinds. Need a lot more commie stuff, and Americans and Brits. Have West Germans troops too, but need others.

Dances with Clydesdales18 Sep 2015 5:13 p.m. PST

Since I started in the early 80's, my 1985 era is largely complete. I have lots done. US, USSR, Poland, Czechs, UK, FRG, French, Danish, Israel, arab, etc. As for 1990s and beyond, too many yet to paint to list.

Lion in the Stars18 Sep 2015 6:23 p.m. PST

No modern naval, missiles take all the fun out of it.

Cold War on the ground? Well, I wanna do "Coldest War:" Swedes and Soviet VDV. Waiting for Geoff to release the S-Tank and PBv302.

Ultramodern ground is all for the Sandbox and Asscrackistan. Americans from QRF, Stryker platoon. I need someone to make the other Strykers (Mortar carrier, ambulance, ATGM, and MGS. Everything else can be built on the ICV chassis)

I have Vietnam in 15mm, and then WW2 in 15mm.

Lion, you need some missile boats.

Great fun in the missile age!

Recommended, with the scale(s) you prefer, and Bulldogs Away, or Shipwreck for the rules.

nickinsomerset19 Sep 2015 12:01 a.m. PST

Going historically accurate with a battlegroup based on 1RS from 33 (UK) Armd Bde, or could add 4 Warriors and base it on 1QLR in 1986!

As for the Sovs again gone for either a Regiment from 7 Guards MRD or 10 Guards TD, both 3SA. These chaps will also make an appearance now I am working on 11 ACR:

[/URL]

Near by is a T-80/BTR60 MRR and just down the road a T-80/BMP MRR.

As for T-72 and T-55, some elements of the NVA will make an appearance.

And plenty of variety with Belgians and Bundeswehr chucked in!
My time in BAOR so based on the historical Orbats and TO&E and not a book.

Tally Ho!

David in Coffs20 Sep 2015 3:20 p.m. PST

I made a command decision to focus on 20mm as I found that in micro I didn't used my forces as well – I tended to expend them in a more cavalier fashion – I lacked empathy for my micro soldiers fate and so I sold them to buy more 20mm.
In micro for CD I had:
Soviet MR division T-64 BTR-60 complete with FROG and helicopter support
Syrian Tank Division T-62/T-55 BMP-1/BTR-50
Israeli Armoured Bde

@Mako: No, I served on missile boats, you don't want them shooting. evil grin

Oh, wait, you meant missile-armed FACs. Maybe with FACs on both sides. FAC swarms versus real warships doesn't seem much fun.

Mako1121 Sep 2015 9:30 p.m. PST

Yes, those little ones, that stay on the surface, at least until the shooting starts.

Actually, there are some really good scenarios with "modern" FACs vs. larger warships, especially if you go back to the 1950s with torpedoes vs. early Cold War vessels (basically like WWII ships), and/or early missile boats vs. various craft. Lots of variety to choose from.

You can even use German S-100 class boats into the 1950s and 1960s with the Danes, etc..

Jemima Fawr:
Wow. I learned long ago that you are a committed collector and gamer when I found out from you that you have battalions of WWII Sherman tanks in 15mm. The above list convinces me more that you are devoted to the collection of and use of 15mm forces. I applaud your devotion to the hobby but wonder how you and others can afford to amass such large amounts of kit without becoming insolvent? I don't drink or smoke and I do the best I can to make this my one vice and guilty pleasure, but I am definitely on a limited wargaming budget. Thank you and others above for being an inspiration and for the knowledge that I am not alone in this obsession to accumulate such toys of the trade. Clearly I have a ways to go before I reach the heady heights of Mount Olympus and the pinnacle of this seductive hobby. Something to work towards!
Well it's time to get back to painting before my holiday break ends.
Cheers and good gaming.
Rod Robertson.

chrisswim28 Dec 2015 11:39 p.m. PST

Rod Robertson, You have a nice group, you really do!
Where do you live? I am in Florida, Jacksonville area.
What manufacturer is your stuff? Mine is mostly GHQ, some CinC and some other stuff: Scotia, In-Service, Ros, Sky-trex, etc.
CavScout8thCav, what about you?
Anyone else in 6mm, 1/285 scale modern micro armor….

When I collect, I use 1:1 ratio for vehicles. So if I have an armored division, I am counting about 330 Abrams and 130 Bradleys. I may be light on arty and certainly trucks. Need 10-15 times as many trucks as anything for the logistics. But we are war gamers, or at least try to be in most cases.

chrisswim28 Dec 2015 11:47 p.m. PST

Jemina, Nice collection for your larger scale. I will not ask how you get it all on a table for 1 nationality as I cannot, even in the same camo pattern for my modern micro armor.

TGunner, Let me know if you want that Russian combat command, I may have one. I have about 10 available, they are of different types.

Mako1128 Dec 2015 11:58 p.m. PST

Wow, that's a lot of armor!!!

What size tables do you use, and which rules, chrisswim?

I can't see fielding more than a battalion of armor on the table per side, plus perhaps some attachments.

Doing games at the regimental and divisional level at 1:1 scale would certainly be impressive, and I suspect more than a little time-consuming.

freecloud29 Dec 2015 3:25 a.m. PST

Most of my stuff is c 1980, all 1/300, 6 armies:

- French (NATO)
- Czech
- US Marines
- French (Foreign Legion, Sipahis d'Afrique)
- African "Banana Republic"
- Imagi-Nation "New Byzantium"

I went for France & Czech. forces as they are both rarer and a bit different vs most "Euro Cold War" collections (and all my gaming buddies had those others already). Ditto US Marines, most people in my circle do Army – USMC are higher morale but older kit. The FFL is small but very high morale/capability with top class but light equipment. African force is based on ex-British colony with Soviet & Chinese supplied gear – so lots of 40's and 50's kit, and poorer training, but quantity has a quality of its own :). It can also double as a generic Arab force c '56-'73. I plan to add a Cuban style expeditionary force next, to give them a bit of backbone.

Imagi-Nation forces are an opportunity to put stuff together that otherwise won't be, and even make up a few things – it's based on those of the "neutrals" on the WARPAC/NATO border eg Yugoslavia, Finland, Austria – see:

link

Most recent project was upgrading French to a 2000's force with some Leclercs

As to rules, been gaming since the 1980's so shifted from WRG to Cold War Commander to Fistful of TOWs

Different rules have different notional scales so my army size depends on ruleset (eg a tank model is a tank in WRG, but is a tank platoon in Fistful of TOWS) but each force (except FFL & Marines) has about 30 tanks, similar no of APCs, plus all the various ancillary bits and bobs.

Table size – minimum 6 x 4 ft, 9 x 6 better.

Also have a few fighter aircraft of same era for dogfights but never really found a set of rules that did it for me, so its mainly the helos and strike aircraft that see air-action these days.

Rod I Robertson29 Dec 2015 7:30 a.m. PST

chrisswim:
I am up in Canada. Montreal, in the province of Quebec to be more specific.
My kit is mostly GHQ, CnC and some H&R stuff that nobody else made at the time I was buying (engineering kit mostly).
My formations are all in a 1:1 ratio so there are a lot of little tanks lying about here. Compound that with WWII microarmour and 15mm Ancients and WWII and I am running out of room. Add to that 15mm Cord War and Ultramodern forces and you can see that I'm in too deep by far!
No military affiliation, I am a civilian through and through.
Cheers and good gaming if you can find the room!
Rod Robertson.

chrisswim29 Dec 2015 4:08 p.m. PST

Mako,
At conventions such as Historicon 1.5 years ago in Fredricksburg, VA, I ran Russia invasion of Ukraine on a table about 6-7 feet wide, 30 feet long. Ran a follow up scenario the next day with NATO helping Ukraine (US Army and Polish forces) attacking. I did set up a logistics base for the US forces, used a few drones,
.
We played at my house last week on a table 6 x 8 feet. Much smaller encounters. Putinville(Russia I-magine Nation) against the US. First & last game were Stone (10 yr old son) against his father. The last game was the two of them again and it was 6 vehicles vs 8 with some infantry. The middle game was Stone and me as the US vs. the Russians. Stone will be a great player.

Rod, I trade with a few guys in Canada: 7.62 (Mick) and Cama as they are known on the GHQ site. I too, do 1 to 1. I need to lighten my game stuff. 15mm Zulus, Egyptians, and Brits. My WW2 vehicles and men in 15mm, my WW2 micro armor. Perhaps get rid of my WW2 1/2400 naval: US, Uk, French, German, Italian, Japanese.

Thanks for the info, Chris.

Nyet, comrade, on the wheel painting!

Of course, if you live near the beach, and can cover airfare and living expenses, I just might be persuaded, since it is rather cold here right now.

Mako, I have a house near the beach, 100+ yards from the ocean. I would be a little short on the airfare & expense. I painted the wheels on 30 ASLAV. Still need to do 27USMC LAV and 14 LAV-25 for the Aussies.

Posted pics on FB: chris's micro armor, 6mm wargaming, table top gaming to name a few. They look pretty nice now.

For me its a big mix 1960s-90s African bush wars in 28mm, the rest are 20mm 87-91 Europe (same as my service period), Iraq first and second war, Afghanistan and a imagination set in the former soviet union. I have a bunch of aircraft also.

28mm Bush wars

Rhodesian, Mercs, South Africans, Cubans, Russians various communist rebels etc most of it unpainted though!

That close huh?

Well, I could settle for a bus ticket, a jar of Jif, creamy peanut butter, and a loaf of white bread, plus a case of real sugar, Pepsi.

The above would be my backup, just in case the fishing doesn't pan out. Have speargun, will travel.

Nickinsomerset.
Nice stuff, good looking vehicles.
On the 6mm need a few A-10 to come in… after SEAD.
Nice looking terrain too.
