Now that a larger board is desireable for DBA 3.0, I decided to retire my 3' boards and go for 4'x4'. To make it small enough to fit in the car I have hinged together two 2'x4' boards. The boards themselves are made of pink insulation foam board for light weight. The hinges and edges are made from black gorilla brand duct tape. The board was then painted, sprayed with adhesive and flocked. I'll do a protective over spray once I am satisfied with the flocking.

Hopefully this weekend I'll finish it up and get some final shots uploaded.

I'd be very interested in seeing the finished product. Do you like the idea of a board better than a 4 x 4 cloth?

In DBA board edge is quasi-randomly determined, so it is useful to be able to pick up the whole board and rotate it before the troops are deployed, but after the terrain is placed. That's hard to do with a fabric playing area.

Interesting idea. Did you consider making the hinge an interior fold so the flocked surfaces would face each other when you had it folded-up? Seems to me that would protect your playing surface from accidental dents and dings. Just a thought.

Very cool idea!

Why 4'X4'? Are you playing 25mm on those?

It is an internal hinge. You are exactly correct, that folding inward will help protect the flocking.

Dervel,

Yes this is for 25mm battles for DBA, or HotT. In 15mm terms it corresponds to about a 32" board for that scale.

We play on a 4x4 board for 25mm, but I slightly prefer a 3x3 board for that scale.

I thought 2 by 2 and 3 by 3 were the sizes?

Phil accepted the suggestion of some helpers to have a range of size for battlefields.

"PLAYING AREA
The standard playing area, "the battlefield", is square; with sides 600mm/24" to 800mm/32" for the smaller scale and
900mm/36" to 1,200mm/48"square for the larger scale. "

I have done many 15mm DBA 3 games on the old standard 2" by 2" board. For 25mm I am tending toward 46" by 46" Mainly because I came into a large supply of heavy cardboard in that size but also, it is just enough bigger than the 3foot version to allow a bit more maneuver.

I was using "science fair" folding display boards at 36" by 48" earlier, with both 24" and 36" areas marked out on them. Cost only $5 USD-6. I was going to get some of these at $7 USD

But got access to free scrap 46" pieces. May get one of the professional ones for travel.
