Has anyone got any suggestions for gaming the Battle of Ashdown link ? Normally I'd use DBA or Neil Thomas' rules for this period but I'm wondering if there are other rulesets out there which might give more of a feeling for the battle? I like DBA in general, but I worry that the tactical simplicity of this battle would make for quite a dull game. |

Do consider peter Pig's LONGSHIPS. It has a full battle system in addition to the raiding system. martin |

A couple of months ago, we played a BBDBA version of Magnesia and were a bit worried that the lack of terrain might make things a trifle boring and simple game. How wrong we were! DBA 3.0's subtleties made for a fascinating and interesting game. Admittedly the Seleucids are a veritable cornucopia of interesting glittery troop types, but the opposing Romans are a much more homogenous mass. A mass which, by the way, triumphed. I'd give DBA a try. The new 3.0 makes for a more interesting shieldwall type battle I think. Of course, I would say that since we about to embark on a Dark Ages Britain campaign next week. |

for dark age battles I like Hail Caesar. it has a real feel for shieldwalls coming together and grinding it out. i use them to do a similar battle, the battle of Ethandun Edington. just 7 years later in 878. -Stew |

I've had a couple of goes with DBA in the meantime: link Thanks very much for the other suggestions, I'll be looking closely at them. |
