"Now that you've chosen an army it's time to learn the rules of Warhammer 40K so that you can in turn understand your army. Reading your army's codex without a fundamental understanding of the game rules will be extremely confusing. I would also refrain from making any purchases for your army, except the codex, at this point as well. You want to make informed decisions when building up your army and spending money so get a grasp on the rules and your army's rules (next article), before spending money…"

Good advice, especially the bit about refraining from spending any money until you have read the rules to get a better understanding of the game.

All this may sound like common sense, but there are too many people out there who see a cool 40K army and splurge on impulse only to change their minds later and end up selling the models they no longer want on consignment for a mere fraction of what they paid for them.

Of course is the models themselves spur you to buy them then you should just buy them. It isn't like 40K is the only game you can use them for. Hell, it isn't one of 1 of 10 games you could use them for.

If you like the models, buy them.

Although I would say try it out with cheap models if it is the first wargame you have played and you don't know if you like wargaming.

But that would be true of anything.

The rules are simple but the cheesy way you can put armies together using different forces from different codices is the hard part. Do you intend to play tournaments or just for fun games is the essential question.

So basically:

Place your miniatures on a table that barely has any terrain then roll to see who goes first.

Then move your models and roll buckets of dice.

Then your opponent rolls his bucket of dice and gets his turn where you both get to roll more buckets of dice.
