Could you recommend a book, a single tome that would be a starting point in the period eploration. I am aware of The Colonial Wars Source Book by Haythorntwaite. Is there anything else? I primarily think of British Colonialism during Victorian age.

Victoria's Little Wars by Byron Farwell should get you started.

Nice. Thank you both.

The following would flesh things out for the essential two titles above…

Featherstone, Donald, "Colonial Small Wars, 1837-1901

Featherstone, Donald, "Victoria's Enemies: An A-Z of British Colonial Warfare

Knight, Ian, "Marching to the Drums: Eyewitness Accounts of War from the Kabul Massacre to the Siege of Mafikeng"

Cheers,

NO, sorry Rich, but that is too subject centric (though it is THE go to book on the subject).

Small Wars is an excellent book. However, it must be approached with EXTREME caution! There are so many Wars covered that you may find yourself immersed in Colonials for quite a while.

Second Col Campbell's recommendation of Queen Victoria's Little Wars.

I suspect it's too narrow for you but Edwin Herbert's wargaming the 2nd boer war is very good : PDF link

Also Ted Herbert's Handbook for Colonial Wargamers from the VMS – but very hard to find, took me years. I'd second the recommendation of Battle in Africa

Just so you know, many of the books referred to consist of potted narrative histories of the major campaigns of the era (e.g. Bond and Farwell), whereas 'Small Wars' is a detailed military technical analysis that examines all aspects of the conduct of colonial campaigns by reference to pertinent historical examples. It could very well have been subtitled 'How to Fight a Colonial War'.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I feel overwhelmed with the response, but this is how it usually
goes: you want to scratch into a new era and the next moment you are neck deep in the matter. Very good and eciting. My local public library system has Featherstone.
