I was wondering if anyone would know what the symbol is in the wreaths of this chasseur a' cheval 5th regiment's guidion:
In the dragoons it was the regiments number. IIRC in the horse artillery it was a grenade ( and that of the Empress Dragoons de la garde). Was this symbol that of the CaCs and thus on all the regiment's guidions or just unique to this regiment's? My limited access has resulted in my research to turned up empty. thanks for your help MG |

the symbol looks like a 5 to me! the guidon has become so transparent that you can see the reverse 5 through. |

Yes a 5 polluted by the one from the other side. |

Good Catch! I did not see that since the middle number did not bleed through, as would be expected. Thank you! MG |

The citation on the other side would say VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE (1-4)EME ESCADRON so the numbers would not match by position or similarity. Just a bit of extra info. |

That is so clever. I looked and looked at this thinking it looked like a five….but just not right. It is the other side showing through what is getting to be very thin and transparent fabric……….. Not sure I would ever have worked that one out! |

The original 1804 issue flags were a single layer of silk with the gold decorations painted on. |
