I have just spotted some of the Erckmann-Chatrian novels free online. They are written by two authors, who were said to have been anti-military and anti-war, but their novels have been described as very enjoyable reads, although I can't confirm that, not having read any of them, as yet. There appear to be four Napoleonic novels available:
The Conscript (1813 period)
The Invasion of France 1814
Waterloo
And the Blockade of Phalsburg (not sure which year?)
