To announce a Yahoo group for a new set of 18th Century rules, Best Allies link Still very early stages but we would welcome any comments. Its a big battle set with individual units representing battalions or squadrons. |

VVV reply, Thanks for sharing. After a quick scan of the rule (and I do mean quick!): Units are battalions and move by brigade? Only artillery have ranged fire, all other units must be in contact for combat? Combat uses D12? Thanks again, Bill. |

Yes units are grouped into brigades and activated by brigade. Alternating between players and the initiative to activate the first brigade being rolled for by each player at the start of each turn. Unit activation system is the same as used in the VVV WW2 rules, Action All Fronts. Brigade and senior commanders have a command rating which allows them to issue a certain number of move orders to their brigades. Contiguous units count as one block and can be moved as one move order. So even a poor commander can keep a brigade moving so long as it moves as one block. Units in line can only make one move a turn, which limits their speed. Currently all units (except for artillery) have to move into contact to fight. I thought that made combat a bit easier to define and saved range measurement. But one member of our group wants to have musket ranges. So the next version of the rules will see a musket range of 2 and we will see how it goes. Since combat is initiated by the active brigade, the rule of musketry will be that if you are in range and even if that brigade is not active they may fire (friend and foe). Yes D12s for combat and morale. Initial rules are up on the site and one of the team will be putting up some army lists shortly. I will also do a revised set of rules with our thoughts so far (see comments above). |

Now is the time to start putting together some army lists for these rules. The wars covered would be: Great Northern war War of Spanish succession Swedish invasion of Russia Polish succession Austrian succession Bavarian succession Jacobite rebellion Carnatic war Seven years war American colonial wars American war of Independence Napoleons expedition to Egypt War of the First Coalition If you have any input on any of the forces involved I would be delighted to hear from you. The army lists are organised into chunks of 200 points. Each 200 points in the army will have a minimum and maximum number of units involved. |
