…for July 2016 release. It's been a long time coming but finally Osprey turn their attention to this key conflict in the so-called "early" samurai period. link Let's hope they make a good job of it. In particular I hope they get the pictorial side spot on with no more anachronistic or plain fantasy elements that find their way into 12th century Japanese mini ranges… |

Turnbull? At least it will not be recycling stuff from 3 other Ospreys! |

Great review thank you. Too bad Turnbull didn't elaborate a bit more in your interview; you asked some good questions and most of his answers are pretty short. |

Codsticker, I should make it clear that wasn't my review as I haven't got the book yet :) Just one I found through searching! Will post my own impressions here after I get hold of it. For the moment – and game-figure related – I would say Giuseppe Rava, on the basis of that cover, manages to get great detail into his illustrations. Excellent treatment of the cloth textures like the shiny silk of the warrior's under-robe contrasted with other parts. Great composition of dynamic, harmonious shapes. Great illustrator for Osprey! On the other hand, occasionally the anatomy, perspective and foreshortening is slightly askew. At first I thought the samurai archer on the left was reaching for an arrow, overarm from the quiver (ebira), European style, which is not the Japanese way. But now I think the hand comes back from the arrow release? |

But now I think the hand comes back from the arrow release? Yeah, that's classic kyujutsu shooting pose. Now to find a good ruleset that allows for individuals to affect combats without being something like Warhammer Ancients. |

I'm busy reading it now. It's well written and makes good use of Japanese sources which Turnbull doesn't take at face value. The atwork is nice too. It really makes me want to start a Gempei army. |
