I fought Quatre Bras a couple of years ago using a slightly reworked version of Grande Armee rules to bring them down to battalion level. Fast forward to this year and I finally gave up on the sensible idea of having 6mm figures on large bases. This meant a substantial rebasing project of my Napoleonics to allow them to be used for my favoured Napoleonic ruleset, General de Brigade. Had to get my head around the new Deluxe Edition but well worth it.

I am a newbie with the blog so hope you enjoy this battle report. It was fought solo and a great time was had!

Lovely figures and table, i remember Purbeck terrain :)
Got all my 6mm naps on the larger bases, for other rule systems ill make a work around, re basing all those lovely figures is not my idea of fun, hats off to you sir for the commitment.

Thanks for your comments moonfleetminis. Agree not sensible to rebase all my figures which will total over 8,000 by the time I have finished! It is unlikely that I will deviate from General de Brigade again though. I have made a concious decision to avoid being tempted by all the new shiny rules being produced at an alarming rate and stick with what I know and enjoy. It is a shame Purbeck Terrain is not around any more. They provided several custom built boards for me. Very pleasant and accommodating chaps.

Yes indeed a great looking game and excellent report.

You have by the sound of your introduction noted that GdeB are a really good set of rules. A good balance between realism (detail) and fast play.

Looks wonderful. You are in the same place as me I think. I want the large battles with units at 1:20 on company /squadron bases. I am considering moulding my own unit bases (line and column) to allow me to move things around a lot quicker.

How did you find the GdeB played with so many units on the table?

For your blog, it would be great if you added a "Follow Me" thingy so we can follow the blog and get updated when you add new.

Thanks everybody for your kind comments.

rct75001 it was a challenge initially having so many units and I did wonder if it was a wise move! The key is to get organsised. It would be all too easy to forget what each unit was compelled to do as I worked through the various phases. I therefore developed a system of placing different coloured micro dice against each unit when appropriate as a reminder. e.g. White – compulsory move next turn; Red – morale check from firing casualties; Green – other morale checks etc. Another option I had considered and may well try in the future is to split the battlefield into sections and work through the entire turn before moving on to the next section. For this battle though it was difficult to do as there was no clear break between different parts of the battlefield.

To reduce the number of markers on the board I recorded casualties on a roster sheet removing figure bases as appropriate. Another compromise was the omission of skirmishers. I felt that it would have bogged the game down, and certainly in this scale would have been very fiddly. Having said that I did use them for refighting Rolica and it was fine for smaller actions. After a few initial hiccups the game flowed well with plenty of drama that GdeB provides for, and in a realistic way.

For me, GdeB provides for a far more immersive experience than other more simple, or should I say 'elegant', rule systems but the price is time. There is no way you could fight a battle like this on a club night unless it is multiplayer.

Re the Blog. Thanks for pointing that out and I have added a 'follow me' button. At some point I will revamp the whole thing and make it look a little better. Still getting my head around it!
