Those look really great, and I like that your figure bases generally match the color of your game mat! Far too many peoples' bases don't, and they just look horrible, in my opinion, since they stand out so much due to that. What are you using for the bases, and what sizes? I need to base some Cold War 12mm infantry myself, so have been pondering what to use. I'm considering pre-cut metal bases, so I can store them on magnetic sheeting, to keep them safe during transport. Your bases look pretty thin, which I prefer, but is there any difficulty in picking them up, without touching the figures? |

Those look great! Especially impressive considering they are 10mm! Great work! |

yes they are for Flames of War I use 1.5mm ply wood bases for all my figures – 6mm Napoleonics and the 10mm WW2 (although for bigger vehicles I use 2mm ply). I used to cut them out by hand when I first started many years ago but I now get them laser cut. All sorts of places do pre-cut bases but by the time I was looking into it I has a lot of figures based already plus I like thinner bases and just didn't want 2mm or thicker which was the norm. but then I stumbles across fenrisgames.com on ebay and then their online shop. They do bases in ply and including 1.5mm. Plus they will cut and size in any quantity. Given they also do pre-buy 'cards' with a bonus and free postage I got one of those then an extra one in their birthday year (last year) with a bigger bonus and now have a nice stock that will keep me going for quite some time. It is really nice to just have the bases to pick up and glue the figures on when you have a load of figures to bases up without the pain of having to cut them out! I find picking them up by the base no problem at all – I have smallish hands but I think that this should generally be easy enough for anyone to do. The approach to basing is pretty much the same for Napoleonics as WW2. the only differences being the dry brush – the final dry brush for WW2 is Ushabti bone (Games Workshop) rather than white – and for WW2 I use tufts as the last stage. I did a tutorial for the Napoleonics: link As for sizes I made my own up for both Napoleonic and WW2 based on scaling down the 25mm or 15mm sizes from the rules I use – the idea being to give the same overall look. This gives some none rounded numbers but with laser cutting no problem. The bases are: general infantry – 22mm x 34.5mm command stand – 20mm x 24.5mm artillery – 34.5mm x 43.5mm small guns same as general infantry Steve |
