Hello,
Can any one recommend some small Scale WWI battles to research?
Thank you

10thMtn,

What's your definition of small? Squad skirmishes, platoon, company, etc…

Jack

For fairly small battles, even down to platoon level, read Rommel's "Infantry Attacks."

There are several other personal accounts that can provide details for small unit battles. Two I can think of off the top of my head are "Some Desperate Glory" by E.C. Vaughn, and Junger's "The Storm of Steel." These at least give a feel for small unit combat. Vaughn's book details a couple of trench raids that he led in 1917, for example.

Try these two books as well on German Tactical Innovation and the other on Raiding:

Oh and of course try…

It is a scenario book, well researched, and has an excellent introduction to platoon tactics for the British and Germans.

Like the suggestions so far. We had a WWI scenario several weeks ago with the Attack on Hill 142 at Belleau Woods. The OOP WH The Great War rules with Over the Top supplement for the American Marines. Both books have their mission scenarios for organizing games. Our group tend to research a historical battle (time period really) and confirm the scenario from that starting point down to a battalion level action for the tabletop.

IMHO, your best bet is "Infantry in Battle", published by the USMC and is available for free here:

PDF link

It provides examples of small unit actions complete with maps and descriptions of what actually happened. There must be 100 vignettes described. Did I also mention it's a FREE pdf you can download?

This book will not only keep you filled with scenario ideas, it will motivate you to try them out for WWI. There are several provided on east and west fronts, British, french, German and USA experiences.

If you are "in" to WWI, you need to have this tome!

it'a nice book…of wich i succeeded in purchasing an old hardback edition..plenty of maps at almost skirmish level..but practically no mention of German OOB or even which unit where involved VS the US …so very difficult to reconstruct the action as a tabletop scenario

Infantry Attacks by Erwin Rommel, about infantry action in 1914 when he was a junior infantry officer.

Italwars: I have the paperbound second edition. Aug 2000, ISBN: 0-940328-3). In the forward, it says the maps were redone. In my copy, unit designations appear on the maps and sometimes in the text. Yes, it is primarily based upon small unit operations. The OP asked for such. Also in my copy, there is a list of units and the pages they are mentioned on in the back. (Page 417 in my edition under the heading "Index to Units" and runs , double columns, to page 419.

The free copy link hits the highlights and like you say, is a nice book and meets the OP's needs. Glad you found the book useful.

thanks for further clarify Dye4minis
but my main (and only) problem to convert those little jems of cations together with nice maps is the lack of info (number and type pf troops involved)regarding the Germans…maybe i could write down scenarios TOEs with logical ratio between attackers and defenders in mind…but to know who is who among the opponent would have been nice
