Does anybody know how the hay was transported to feed the elephants pulling guns in the 2nd Afghan War.I was thinking about using the new bullock drawn wagon by Ironduke Miniatures with the high sides and filling it up with some sort of representation of hay. Any thoughts on this?

Makes me think of the pic here:

Tha's a good picture. I am wondering if they transported hay via wagons or packed onto camels. Camels would have been better through mountains but I think wagons would have held more and been easier to refill and unload.

Not sure, Rhingyll. My assumption would be both methods were used, depending on circumstances, though there were a number of times during the war when wheeled transport was purposefully left behind due to their expected difficulty getting through the terrain to be traversed, such as when Roberts led his famous march from Kabul to Kandahar. As you suggest, I assume the hay for those elephants was carried by camel, and collected from the locals.

On another front, I just ordered both of those bullock carts from Iron Duke!

Those bullock carts are just to nice to resist. I am going to load the one with the high sides with hay and say that it was the hay for the elephants. It will be part of the 40 pounder gun supply train.
