The sad thing is that the US didn't use this version, most (if not all, I don't have my references at the moment) were sent to the Soviets.

Well the US actually DID "use" it. Just not much.

The USMC used it in the mid-war period. It was the first Sherman that was available to them (as all production of the M4 and M4A1 up to that point, was taken by the US Army and British LL commitments).

And the chassis was the basis for the M10 tank destroyer, for much the same reasons (although also the TD board seemed to prefer the M4A2 powerpack, finding the M4 and M4A1 a bit under-powered for their purposes).

But once M4A3 production was made available to the USMC, most M4A2 production went to LendLease partners. The French operated many, while the Soviets indeed got the majority of production.

Kind of funny to see the Sherman's name written in Cyrillic letters on the Zvezda box: Шерман. Perfectly reasonable, but I never thought about it before.

It was fairly common in Commonwealth service as the Sherman III being the standard Sherman type used in the Mediterranean theatre, with some Sherman I and II being used as well until late in the war when 76mm and firefly tanks appeared.

The USMC apparently also found it convenient they used diesel like landing craft etc.

It was pretty much the only type of Sherman sent to the Soviets.

The Sherman III was also common among independent British & Canadian Armoured Brigades in NW Europe (8th, 27th & 2nd Canadian Brigades).

Is it just the 76mm version, or is 75mm an option*?

*notwithstanding the minor hull changes.

The USMC never used the 76mm version, which is what the kit is, neither did the British. Post war I believe that some were sent to Canada, although IIRC those were E8 versions.

the Sherman used in the film fury, from the bovington collection is an m4a2, but with hvss.
just useful for the Russian then, but as zvezda is a r8ussian company, why not.

I've just put one of these together.

It's a bit more complicated than the PSC shermans. The hull alone is made up of 9 pieces and the turret 5.

comparing it to the PSC M4A3 the Zvezda kit is about 1mm wider and 2mm longer.
