Just wondering, say Pike & Shotte, how many pike stands people use, im thinking either 12 or 16 men so 3 or 4 stands with 3 stands of 4 muskets either side :) Cheers Mike |

At my gaming group we came from DBR in 15mm, so we're using 4 dbx bases per normal unit in 2x2 formation for Pike, Shotte and heavy horse, and 1X4 for commanded shotte and skirmishing cavalry. |

I always want the standard(s) in the middle, which means a minimum of seven stands (or another odd number). This would mean three stands of pike and two stands of musketeers on each side. But if possible three stands of musketeers on each side would look better. This makes regiments of 9 x 4 = 36 figures. |

For ECW, the pike:musket ratio varied from 1:1 to 1:2, so for a 36 figure regiment at 1:1 then you would have 18 figures with pikes and 18 figures with muskets. At 1:2 it would be 12 figures with pikes and 24 with muskets. |

It depends on how many "stands/bases" you use. I would personaly perfer as few bases as possible, If 16 pikemen, try two bases of 8. 8 front and 8 back, in the pikestand you can add command figures(on the front base) There is no rule that pikes and shot should be on the same bases. pike can be on 2 big 8 figures bases, shot can be on 4 or 6 figure bases. The ratio decides how many of each. |

I use 1 for 10mm figs and 4 for 28mm figs. |

I use rules that use "stands" rather than "figures" . . . so I use what looks good to me.
I use square stands and put three shot on a stand; and five pikes/flags per stand (think of the 5-pip on a d6). To see some six-stand units, look here: link or here: link Or for three-stand units, look here; link And for how these units look in battle: link All figures are 28mm (Warlord Plastics, Perry Metals and others). Stand size is 2" square (actually mine are only 45mm square so that they will fit in my cabinet properly).

Hi MajorB JUst in relation to your 1:2 12 and 24. Would that be 12 pikes + the officer ensign drummer etc or would these be mixed in with the pike stands |

JUst in relation to your 1:2 12 and 24. Would that be 12 pikes + the officer ensign drummer etc or would these be mixed in with the pike stands Depends on the rules. If the officer, ensign and drummer are supenumaries, i.e. don't count towards the unit's strength and are just there for show then they would be additional to the 12 pikes. If they are counted as part of the figure strength of the unit then they should be mixed in with the pikes. |

Iuse larger untis than most but for 16 pikes I'd use for stands of 4 – command figs included the for a 2-1 ratio 32 shot in 2 sleeves of 16 again in 4 stands of 4 – the whole unit then form 4 ranks- ie 2 stands deep representing the 6-8 ranks of the origonal unit . thus the whole unit is 48 figs representing a single battalion I have 3 such in a Tercia (that would be battalia in Pand S termeinology. I simply don't get the current idea of forming the shot half as deep as the pikes when the unit is formed in battalia. The drillbooks do not make the shot form shallower so why does Pike and Shotte and Defy a king. ??? There are times when the shot double their files but its not the basic manoevre formation. |
