I'm looking to build a Florentine Republic army and would like to hear what ranges/ models you might recommend? I'm drawn to 28mm for the colour but haven't discounted 15mm though I wouldn't go smaller. Thanks in advance. |

At what era do you want to place your army? The army of the Republic that stood in defiance to the Medici and fought in the Italian wars until 1530 is certainly different from the armies that were fielded in the 14th or 15th century. |

I'm going for 2nd half of the 15th century using Perry plastics (mostly) for Venetians. I imagine you could do the same for Florentines. This guy does flags that may interest you: auction |

I'm guessing, since this is posted in Renaissance but not Mediaeval, that Riddcowler isn't thinking about a C14-15 army but maybe Machiavelli's militia of 1506-1512? "… each given a white waistcoat, a pair of stockings half red and half white, and an iron breastplate. Most also had lances; some of them had arquebuses." If so, I should think the TAG Italians would be appropriate in 28mm – link |

Remember that Perry has supplemental parts for their figures available, heads, shields, and other accessories, that you can use to make the plastics more amenable to use as Italians. |

Thanks for the replies gents. I'm initially looking at Machiavelli's militia (as GurKhan correctly surmised, though I should have been more specific) though I may reconsider if the Perry plastics are suitable for a later 15th Century force. Decisions, decisions! :) |

Well, Renaissance is a fluent term in wargaming circles, but the 15th century for Italy certainly belongs to the Renaissance (while to all but wargamers the 17th century does not). I would take a look at TAGs Italian range. The Perry minis are always worth a look, too. Mirliton has some fine minis, though is lacking in variety of poses for this era (imho). |
