I've posted on my blog about the New Zealand flag process.

I particularly love this abstract flag design that has come from nowhere in a late push against the process (even though it is a forlorn chance, as the kitschy final four are now locked in for the final vote):

The Red Peak is a pretty good flag. Modern, different, and yet still evoking a classic design.

(I'm extra impressed because I've been trying to design flags for some SciFi nations, and the best ones I've come up with are obviously derivative. Designing a good flag is hard.)

Not bad, but if I still think a plain black flag with either a fern leaf or the stars in white would be a cool flag!

Your country but I like the Union flag in the corner.
Ad a Maori symbol & then the NZ flag would reflect the nation.

But as I said, the will of the people is all=important & whatever is chosen will be the right choice.

I like the red peak design but I also like the bottom right design of the four chosen for the final vote.

The comment that the last four look like they are corporate logos (I may be slightly misquoting – my apologies) is probably exactly what a national flag has become in quite a few instances…it's an interesting observation.

I'd make it a big red tuatara on a field of green. Who else has tuataras?

Red Peak would get my vote.

One important consideration when designing a flag is that is easy for children to draw when they are making pictures of their flag. The fern designs are a little complex, as is the one with the person standing on the top of the mountain. Any of the triangle versions seem good to me.

Really?

Like the graphic of other countries flags, very clever.

Interesting how much interest there is in the flag now we are talking about changing it.
I've not paid much attention to red peak, but Rolys pictures at the top of the page gives it a story for the first time.
However, I find it odd, that there were debates setup around the country over an extended period, to discuss our change of flag. The largest turn out they had was 12 people!
Now, that the official selection is down to four, there are suddenly 7,000+ people who don't like the selection and want to be heard.
What does that say about us?

Phillius, I think it says we don't want to change the flag.

I was born in the UK and like our current flag. This is only confused with the Aussie one as they changed their field from red to blue sometime in the sixties?

However I do know that some Kiwis want to get rid of the Union Jack but think this process has been rushed to take advantage of the Rugby World Cup. I wish we'd taken more time to come up with a better design.

I was going make an informal vote for Eggsplosion but will now go for the Hypno Flag instead.

I guess on the positive side of things, if this is what they're worried and spending time on, perhaps life is good.

My vote is for a giant Kiwi bird on a navy blue background (perhaps a sheep as an alternative – given the preponderance of them in your country), sans the laser beam firing out of its eye.

Brian Smaller06 Sep 2015 11:58 p.m. PST

No offence Roly but I think that is hideous. Not that I think much of the other official choices either – and I wanted a flag change.

Mako1107 Sep 2015 2:38 a.m. PST

I rather like the current flag, especially compared to the other submissions.

" This is only confused with the Aussie one as they changed their field from red to blue sometime in the sixties?"

The blue Aussie flag has been around since 1902 (and introduced across the next couple of years). The red one is the merchant flag introduced at the same time. You are kind of right in that the merchant flag was, until the 50s, the only form which could be flown by private individuals.

There's some amazing artwork starting to appear featuring Red Peak:

I especially like Captain Aotearoa.

Some of those are pretty cool, Arteis02. Thanks for the link.
