Torn between using the FOW basing system (assuming that TY becomes popular) and single bases for BG NORTHAG and other lower level combat rule sets. Or a mix of both ideas. FOW does have the Small bases in both 2 and 3 hole variants a 7 man dismounted squad on three small bases might be a way to go.

John the OFM03 Sep 2015 7:00 a.m. PST

If I were to get into it, I would use the basing for the rules I play.

And although I play FoW, I always go for the plain flat bases, and have never used their silly molded bases with holes.

Martin Rapier03 Sep 2015 7:05 a.m. PST

I base all twentieth century figures on 30x30 bases in approximations of fire teams or crewed weapons. 2 to 3 figures per base, which includes my 15mm cold war stuff.

CAG 1903 Sep 2015 7:17 a.m. PST

Thats the rub, I want to use them for a couple of systems. All my other 15mm modern armies are based individually.

30x30 was how all my WWII and WOTR forces are based (PP fan that I am) but I also have a couple of single figures which then look out of place but I needed them for BG Kursk.

Might mull it over tonight

3 x 3 will allow the use of other rule systems which need differentiation between weapon teams and rifle groups. 3x3 also gives a nice tactile size. We have 3x3 bases right here if you need to buy a whole load?

Haha Martin, you know I base all my other stuff on your 30x30s for my piggy goodness. Just undecided at the mo on whether to go fire team or individual bases.

Mount individually and use movement trays when needed. Simple. Washers and sheet magnet are your friend.

Kenneth Portner03 Sep 2015 8:34 a.m. PST

I don't like basing 15mm infantry individually. For BG Northag or IABNM I'll just use casualty markers. If it's 20mm or larger I base individually. All my kit for BG Kursk et. al. Is in 20mm, based singly.

Because I have more than enough, I'll base for Command Decision and an alternative fire team basing (FoW small or medium bases) that I can use with a variety of rules.

bruntonboy03 Sep 2015 8:47 a.m. PST

30 mill square as per virtually all my figures regardless of period. I long ago decided it was far easier to amend rules to suit my collection than consign myself to endless rebasing.

Cosmic Reset03 Sep 2015 8:50 a.m. PST

Individually for 15mm and larger figs in my case.

Weasel03 Sep 2015 9:21 a.m. PST

For me, 15mm is skirmishing so I base individually.

nickinsomerset03 Sep 2015 10:13 a.m. PST

I base my 20mm stuff individually for casualty removal, and so they can go into extended line, file, single file, box, arrowhead etc. The British will probably spend most games in trenches!!

Tally Ho!

Irish Marine03 Sep 2015 10:19 a.m. PST

We use modified BattleFront WW2 by Fire and Fury games so for 15mm it's two figures to a base which makes one squad. When I do Cold War for Force on Force it will be one 20mm figure per base.

CAG 1903 Sep 2015 10:34 a.m. PST

wimped out. I have gone for 7 man sections. Two 30mm bases of 2 figs each and 3 single figures (RPG, and two from anything else in the squad)

Might get them undercoated tomorrow morning if I am lucky and see what they look like.

CLDecker03 Sep 2015 11:00 a.m. PST

Mine are all based singly with movement trays for units.

May go with a squad/fire team basing, like for FOW/others, but with the individual holes, and magnets, so I can pull the figs off if desired as well, for skirmish games.

So, who makes fairly thin bases with the holes in them like that, where you can insert some magnetic sheeting between the sections to permit that with metal washer bases?

Navy Fower Wun Seven03 Sep 2015 1:58 p.m. PST

Of course this is assuming that TY will continue with the FOW basing system…which is not a given!

However looking closely at the Breakthrough assault preview pictures, the bases do look familiar…

Dunfalach03 Sep 2015 2:59 p.m. PST

@Mako11 You might take a look at what Litko Aero can offer. litko.net

They're who I usually go to for bases and markers, they already have magnetic sheet and thin metal options, and they have a lot of ability to order custom bases. I don't know if they directly have something that would do what you want, but they would probably work with you to see what's possible if they don't.

McWong7303 Sep 2015 4:49 p.m. PST

As per the OFM, but I use pva glue so I can pop them off if I need single based figures.

Yesthatphil03 Sep 2015 4:56 p.m. PST

I'm the same as Martin Rapier by and large …

I do 3 regular infantry per FoW Medium base, with one platoon per company single-based.

Weapons teams get the full crew or nearly so.

Krieger04 Sep 2015 3:09 a.m. PST

Going to do a company worth of FoW-based infantry, and then a platoon single based for skirmish rules probably.

CAG 1904 Sep 2015 10:03 a.m. PST

@Krieger
Exactly what I have decided to do….only thing I need to do is wait to see how they are going to org the 7 man soviet dismounts.

Navy Fower Wun Seven04 Sep 2015 3:52 p.m. PST

Well looking carefully at that photo of the Russian inf it appears they have 4 Riflemen on one base, which looks to be standard size, and the RPG bombardier plus one on a small base…Not saying that's a 'dismount team' though…
