So here in California Gold Country – a local town changed their name from Smithneck Creek to Loyalton in 1863 to show the Feds they were loyal (having voted for Davis the election before). I haven't been able to verify the exact date (just the year) as 1863 – I think it was after Gettysburg because a nearby town changed street names to Lincoln, Grant & Meade at the same time (Meade being relatively obscure before G-day). So after Gettysburg & Vicksburg they declare for the North – when I suspect most knew the North would eventually win anyway). Way to go out on a limb guys. |

As I recall, there is a small local museum in Loyalton. Maybe they can give the exact date of the name change. I wonder if any of the California Hundred (2nd MA Cavalry) came from that area? |
