It questions the common assumption of Ottoman fanaticism and ignorance of European military norms in the treatment of captives. Pouqueville's memoirs of captivity played a crucial role in the emergence of this view, but a comparison of his testimony and Ottoman documents shows that there is a discrepancy between the two accounts.
