Hello All,

I started Wargaming, to be honest, with GW Lizardmen in the 5th edition because I loved the way they looked like Dinosaurs and since I was and still am nuts about them. I have continued it until 7th edition where my education became more important and I left them to collect dust.

Now that I have a bit more time I've decided to come back to them but have noticed that the game I've started with is no longer there, or at least is no longer supported.

So with no where to turn I've come to you, great people of TMP, to ask whether there is a rule system which is still supported where I can play my Lizardmen in a traditional army fashion rather than a skirmish or small warband. It doesn't have to be exactly like WHFB and I'm ok with it deviating somewhat.

Any ideas?

In no particular order.

Armies of Arcana
Age of Sigmar
Kings of War

And there's probably more that I can't remember right now.

Why do the rules need to be 'still supported'? I play TSR's 2nd Ed. BattleSystem rules, published in 1990. The game still plays the same, even though it went out of print more than 20 years ago. Play the rules you enjoy. Forget about the latest/greatest set of rules… Unless you want the tournament scene -- then you will be a slave to the company of your choice.

I still play historical rules sets which have been OOP for years, as well. The games still play well, I still have fun with them, as do those who join me in playing them. Support the rules you enjoy by playing them. If questions arise, or new figures come out which you want to play with, make up rules for them… And enjoy your game. Cheers!

Hi, I actually use those Lizardman figs in my Armies of Arcana army. I am also in love with the figs. The army fights quite well. The Saurus warriors are rock hard. I also use a unit of Krox which are deadly. The AoA list also allows you to use dinosaurs too. They saved my army when an army of Giants attacked us.

Thanks,

John

Armies of Arcana is essentially a Warhammer fantasy variant with a decent point-building mechanic for adding exotic troop types and armies. If you liked the basic system of WFB, you will like AoA. It might be the best of the "let me fix what annoys the [bleep] out of me about WFB" rulesets out there.

I am now playing Age of Sigmar with my long time unused Lizardmen army and finding the rules to be quite fun.

Seconding Kings of War.

There is an online army builder that has already been updated for the new second edition rules and includes a player generated Lizardman army.

My 11 year old son and I play Age of Sigmar with Lizardmen and Skaven, Empire, High Elves and Chaos Warrior Armies. We like big battles too, not skirmishes. My son loves his Lizardmen (what little boy doesn't want to run an army of dinosaurs) and my wife enjoys painting them to the Aztec/Dinosaur theme.

We find AoS offers a great big battle experience – way better than Warhammer Fantasy in its last incarnation.

Thank you for all your suggestions.

While I understand you guys like your AoS I particularly don't so I would like to ask not to keep providing me with that suggestion.

Regarding AoA or KoW is it playable as a solo game? I have two armies which I can use and sometimes I do not want to go to the local club so I play solo which I find satisfies my need.

Once again thank you for your suggestions.

Take a look at Mayhem. The Armies of Mayhem BattleScribe army construction files have ready-to-play Lizardmen unit profiles, and the unit creation rules in the game will allow you to build and customize any units that you can think of.

AoA and KoW are both traditional IGOUGO games that do not necessarily lend themselves to solo play. Frankly, the best solitaire system I have found is the Piquet family of rules, which feature random activation and combat as a built-in mechanic (the card deck dictates which actions you can perform, and roll-offs phase by phase determine how many cards you can turn over). I think solitaire games really need some sort of randomization mechanic to work well and give you some sort of fog of war.

Hostile Realms is the Piquet fantasy variant, though unlike most it is written as a standalone rule book. Piquet and HR assume 4-stand units, so are not necessarily that friendly to armies of single-based figures, but this can be finessed.

I bought Mayhem based on battle reports and comments I read here and elsewhere. I actually picked it up for possible use with either my 15mm or 6mm fantasy figs. I have a 15mm Lizardman army painted and ready for battle. My Undead 15mm army is also ready. I have prepping and priming my Splintered Light Ratmen army too.

Is there a good place to go to talk more about Mayhem or read more?

Thanks,

John

Hey John,

There's a collection of links to various battle reports here. You've probably already read a few of those. For talking about Mayhem, there are some active posters on Tactical Command and other forums like Lead Adventure and BGG.

Feel free to contact me with any questions!
