Years ago I used to design war games for companies like SPI and OSG. I have had a number of books published on military history. I am returning to military history and war games after a sojourn of several years. I am very interested in tactics during the age of the harquebus, musket, and the firelock and would like to communicate with others sharing this passion. I have collected a veritable treasure trove of 16th, 17th, 18th and early 19th century printed primary sources that go into nauseating detail how men fought on the European battlefield, and possibly some of you can help me figure the best way of making this information available to enthusiasts. I am also looking for help with inputting this information into a structured format, translations of foreign language material and creating supporting illustrations. Anyone care to join in? Brent |

Allow me to be the first to drop to my knees and proclaim "All Hail the Great One" in fan boy ecstasy which, for an old fart, is a tad difficult these days. (First thought is Nafziger style, downloadable PDF's, Wargames Vault but I can sense Osprey closing in…) And now I watch as the rules / games writers and and publishers who haunt these halls leap upon you like starved cheetahs on a lame gazelle. |

Brent, welcome to the club. I was standing in front of the bookcase the other day and very nearly dragged Anatomy of Victory out for another read. As far as making the sort of information available that you refer to, I have always thought something in the form of the news sheets of the day (16th & 17th century anyway) would be a good way to go. The pike and shot period has always been my primary interest area, and I'm pretty sure there are plenty more folk here who will say the same. I for one would be more than happy to assist with the project. Although translating documents and creating illustrations are both probably beyond my limited skill set. Phil |

Welcome here, Brent! I would dearly love to assist in any way. Dr. Steven Summerfield also frequents the TMP. As you may know, he is another pilar like yourself that has made information available for the 18th Century nuts like myself. I would like to make some suggestions offline to you sometime in the near future. (Actually, a request for some translated data/ memoirs from period leaders from the WSS thru SYW time frame.) Your Anatomy of Victory got me challenging the way game rules are designed over 15 years ago. Your discussions on cohesion at the unit level, the explanations of what it was like for the leaders and the men was very illuminating. AoV should stay in print as not enough folks have had a chance to own one. Once again, welcome to this forum! v/r Tom Dye |

You should connect with Daniel S, a frequent expert European commentator on this board with access to and a deep knowledge of European primary sources. Many posters here have urged him to publish his expertise in book form. |
