Bolt Action seems to be popular or at least getting that way down here in my new adopted home of Dallas, Texas. I actually got to set up an introductory game to teach myself as well as anyone else at Texas Toy Soldier last night. I nice gentlemen came by with his Americans and I set up my desert terrain and we had a 1000 point North Africa battle. OK while I prefer Battlegroup Kursk, Overlord, et. all. and Fireball Forward, this is a fun game system. Yes it understandably has much in common with earlier editions of 40K it works well and we had a good game of rolling dice and pushing miniatures around the table. What more can anyone ask for.

I plan to use my vast collection of both 28 mm WW II miniatures and Skirmish Campaign books to put on scenarios using the Bolt Action rules and build up a group in my area. Of course the crowd at Texas Toy Soldier are interested in gaming leagues and tournaments. So what is a standard point force for Bolt Action tourneys? What problems do you encounter and how do you fix them?

Thanks

BA is a fun and cinematic game, even if its detractors say it doesn't have that WWII feel.

Standard tournament points are about 1k I believe.

Actually one of the groups here is planning to use their Flames of War 15 mm for Bolt Action. That will be interesting to watch. I agree 28 mm Fanatik, that BA has a cinematic feel. The single action that made the scenario a draw instead of a loss for my Germans is I had a squad that was withing six inches of the American player's Sherman tank that was about to cap my objective marker. This squad already had a couple of pin markers plus had to take the huge minus for attempting to assault a tank. I made the roll and managed to immobilize the Sherman. That was a pretty sweet moment as all the odds were against that German squad. It was the sixth turn and neither of us was in a position to take/destroy the other player's objective. So for me it was a pretty cool re-introduction to the game.

Consider giving light MGs an extra die when firing w Fire order w full crew.

Have used these rules to test play the latest SkirmishCampaigns book and had a great time.

Check out the Bolt Action .Net Season 2 Format rules. It fixes quite a few things and gives you suggested points levels.

I don't personally like the Bolt Action dot Net Season 2 rules, too many spaghetti fixes. The easiest two fixes that really matter:

- +1 dice for infantry and team LMG/MMG/HMG
- Transports contain a crewman who can crew one weapon (even if no infantry are embarked)

I think that BA will help transition more people into historical gaming – which is a good thing. However, personally it is just a little too 'gamey' for me.

OK, I can't let that go by without comment. What's the new book, and when can we expect it?

New book is Guadalcanal. Still have one more scenario to playtest but might be out early next year.
