I'd like to thank everyone for their help and advice on my previous post regarding Pictons third. For anyone who didn't read the previous post I'm starting my first army and will be using "the fighting third" at Vitoria as a base to build from. As it is my birthday coming up my girlfriend has agreed to buy me the brigade deal on warlords new plastic portuguese. Along with the cacadores that I will purchase, these line infantry will make up the 3rd brigade of the division. I intend to follow the guide on the website for painting the line infantry (using a quick shade) and will take my time with characters and personalities. I am planning to put a mounted colonel with each batalion and then a brigade commander as a separate small diorama. Am I right in thinking. That French colonels can be painted as portuguese? Thanks. Looking forward to getting started. As ever I appreciate any advice you may feel is at all necessary. Will post pics when I have anything to show.

A girlfriend that buys figures is to be encouraged. If you could once get her painting, now that would be something!

Starting out (collecting figures, not the girlfriend)

-Avoid tartan at all costs

-Avoid buff facings (because the belts etc do look a bit dull against red)

-White is murder and is probably better off white anyway

-Resist the urge to put British trumpeters on greys

-overdo the wrinkles on redcoats, underdo them on the grey overalls. If you are doing white then God help you….

-keep the bases simple. I grossly overdo mine, with trees, shrubs, casualties, puddles, explosions, weeds, but I am trying to control this now.

Look forward to seeing your work

Fantastic general advice. Exactly what I'm looking for (as well as anything specific… Or anything else that anyone has to offer). Thankyou

I'll try and get a pic of her painting as well

OK, let me try one more. Washes (not inks, they are different and brilliant for leather, varnished wood or horse coats).

No, washes. Seconds to apply and transforms your work.

If nowhere else, apply on a pink face, watch the features emerge and then just simple high lights on the nose, chin and cheek bones. Washes on red bring out all the highlights too.

At risk of sounding like Polonius, with even more advice………. Don't even think of painting in eyes on humans, they will look like homicidal maniacs.

On horses, never show the whites of their eyes unless they have just been shot! Horses' eyes are largely black, with maybe the iris colour (usually dark brown). White, any white, looks like My Little Pony.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be, lose not the common etc etc etc…….oh shut up….

I second the eyes thing. As a teen I always used to try.
Look terrible. Like manga freaks. Now I just leave them dark and unpainted and they look so much better.

I suffer from this, is there a help group out there, Basers Anon perhaps.

"it started with 3 colours of flock and just grew from there, all the guys at the club were doing it, so I'd thought I just try a bit…"

Probably not, the headgear and cut of the coat are wrong.

What you want look like these guys:

Fine advice from deadhead.

I do give my horses' eyes a spec of white in the outer corner because they are at the gallop, but only a spec.

I use dark brown to sketch in the eyes on people.
