Not sure if that is the right term…

Googling images for Viking ships they all have the bow decoration as a dragon. I'm assuming that's as much cliche as truth. Would like to add some variety to my ships. Wondering what else would look good and not stretch history too far.

Maidens? Bears? Horses? Hawks?

No. Dragons of various styles only. As far as I know that was pretty much the cultural norm. But there can be quite a variety of "dragon" heads and tails. The prow and stern decorations were removable/exchangeable/replaceable. Iirc, they were only put on when intending aggression. That way ships approaching each other could display aggression or peaceful intentions from a distance. Of course, subterfuge presented itself, by not displaying a prow and stern carving, and yet approaching fully armed with bellicose intentions….

For a delightful moment I read 'onions' for 'options'…culinary berserkers came to mind immediately.

I've done one with a wolfs head and one with an elk's head (mimicking the Fjord-Elk from the Oathsworn series by Low)

Like GWA writes, just dragons as far as we know. You can vary what they look like, but there are no known examples of anything but dragons.

@uglyfatbloke: Vikings liked their onions so you can imagine them going berserk for them.

I wish I could find my t-shirt with the mickey-mouse vikings on it (a mouse-head prow and bikg round ears on their helmets).

No we don't.

Also some did not have anything.

I was thinking about getting a longship for SWMBO's Vikings – decided I could n't model an adequate onion for the prow.

Drekars were made by hollowing out a dragon carcass like a dugout. How could it have anything but a dragon's head?

The other night I discovered that Peter Pig has a fun selection of non-dragon heads in their 15mm Dark Ages range. The pig head looks especially silly. I love those guys.

Didn't Vikings like and adore Ravens?

Ravens were a reminder that Odin is watching.

Modern Norgies have forgotten so much that they had to import a Dane to teach at their new school for Vikngs wink

I put it down to old age. After all, anyone claiming to be a Viking must be over a thousand years old. They can't be expected to remember anything much by then! ;)

janner06 Sep 2015 10:28 a.m. PST

It's alright, Dr B, I think most here got it the first time wink
