Any thoughts on suitable 20mm figures and vehicles for the Chinese troops in the war against Japan? |

I have seen pictures from Shanghai where the Chinese troops were fully outfitted in German kit as the Germans were their primary military sponsor in the early/mid 30's. |

Wondered about that since I knew that there were several German-trained formations. Do you think we're looking at standard feldgrau uniform colour? It would be an absolute godsend if we could use my wife's existing early war Germans against my Japanese – I really don't want to start another army/painting project. |

There were 10 divisions of the KMT that wore the German M35 helmet. They did not wear German uniforms, but the tunic they wore would pass for German in this scale. The uniform was either blue-grey or khaki, depending on the season. I think there might have been a third color as well, but I think that was done away with. These divisions were effectively destroyed in fighting from Shanghai to Nanking. If you want to stay with German equipment, you can also use a few Pz Is, Sdkfz 221s and 222s, as well as the Pak35/36. |

For German-equipped KMT troops, you want puttees instead of boots. They were equipped with Mauser rifles, but they didn't use German field equipment (leather braces + gas mask carrier + mess kit), mostly they had fabric cartridge pouches and haversacks. The EM tended to be skinny, and the stahlhelm looked big on them. Many KMT soldiers wore a field cap that looked similar to the German feldmutze. Foundry also have 20mm WWII Chinese troops: link When you get into tanks and such, it gets very interesting. Aside from the German equipment listed above, there were also Soviet T-26s (S-Model do the version with the round antenna I've seen in Chinese markings but there are a slew of others), Italian CV-33s (S-Model), and British Carden-Loyd tankettes (Frontline) and Vickers 6 ton tansk (Frontline). Then there were the armoured trains and who knows what other goodies that warlords got their hands on. Good luck and enjoy! |

Don't forget the FT 17s. There were a handful of BT 5s as well. |

I have a photo of Chinese sdkfz 222's with different armament to 20mm..no idea what it is, but its not a 20mm canon |

As above, they wore puttees, so you'd probably want WW1 German troops or possibly WW2 Hungarians. I've usually seen them done in khaki uniforms. |

It looks like your friend has chosen to go with 1/72 WWI Germans, as suggested by Martin. |

Christot, Sdkfz 221? The Chinese certainly used them and there is a photo of one in Burma (200th Division), circa 1942. The Chinese also used M3 Scout Cars, including an unknown number of 81mm mortar carrier variants. There's also a photo of a US 2.5-ton truck towing a 3.7cm PaK 36 in Burma circa 1942. |

There used to be a British company that did Chinese in 20mm for wwii. Their name started with a L . Maybe Lancashire?. Are they still around? Seems like they also had Chinese in German helmet iirc. |

Spoilt for choice are n't we? Looks like I'll have to get some figures and do some painting. Don't mind the former, detest the latter. |

Looks as though this question was asked on TMP a while back and the responses may also help in your quest for 20mm Chinese: TMP link Ezza |

Any ideas for 28mm? I know Brigade Games does figs for the German Armed divisions and Copplestone does some Back of Beyond stuff that could work… |

A late friend of mine did a Chinese army using WWI 20mm Austrian late war figures. Not sure of the make. Since the world basically dumped it's military surplus in China, for a fee; just about any helmet/uniform/weapon could be used. So, Tom used any leftover French/Japanese/ British/ German/ even Chinese! ( From Wargames Foundry). |
