From Don Troiani… an excellent guide for painting. "War of 1812 . A Black Royal Colonial Marine. These were British Royal Marines that served in various naval operations along the American coast during the war. Blacks mostly from the Caribbean islands were recruited for this service. Interesting that the Colonial Marine is wearing a regular round hat with white over red plume vice the RM round hat with the side brims turned up and taped (white). |

As far as I know, they were called the "Corps of Colonial Marines", not "Royal". @ Iron Duke: Perhaps it was a deliberate distinction from the RM, perhaps just expediency as the latter's rather special hats may have been harder to procure? In any case, if I had to stand guard on Marie Galante or some place in Florida, I know which piece of headgear I'd prefer! |
