Finally got around to finishing my first attempt at using cork bark to represent rocks/bluffs or cliff faces. The piece I bought was enough to do two terrain pieces, one of which I made into a cave(the cave entrance shape was ironically just naturally formed into the side of the cork bark!). These all utilize cut MDF bases. The cork bark was sawn into workable chunks and then I glued them onto the base board into a sort of semi-circle. I then took a piece of 2" insulation foam and cut and shaped it to fit into the area behind the semi-circle. I did a lot of cutting and sanding to bring the foam down to level with the cork bark and so that there was a natural blending of the surfaces. I used wall filler to fill all the gaps in between the cork bark and foam. I then glued sand over the entire piece and when that was dry painted all the sand areas brown with high lights of lighter brown. I finished it off with base coats and high lights of paint and also two different shades of flock. The standing stone and rocks are made from pink insulation foam and are finished in the same way; link link link link |

Looks great! If you did not note that this is your first attempt, I would have assumed you worked with bark before. Thanks for sharing. |
