Hi folks,

Please drop by my blog to see my prototype for 3D campaign maps. Love to hear feedback on them as I continue to test out new designs.

Hey that would make a good Blucher map when using the cards. Though it would have to be a bit bigger.

I like it

I think they are superb, simple and very effective. They remind me of the Squad Leader boards but on a smaller scale. Squad Leader used three entry roads on the longest side allowing more flexibility with board design. I would enjoy all your maps joined together in various positions to see the multitude of different terrain designs. With only a few boards you can represent vast areas. Keep going, looking forward to viewing more of your work.

I really like these! Simple but very effective as trenchfoot said.

I'm thinking of using this technique for my Warhammer campaign maps.

Really nice work!

I recently saw a bas-relief map made for the same purpose. The maker shared how he used pins, with round plastic, colored heads, to mark the positions of the PC's as they moved about on the map. It was rather brilliant, I thought. Would love to do something similar for my campaign, which is largely based in a big medieval city, but I didn't want to get bogged down in a highly detailed sculpting project, which might, or might not, get a lot of usage… Never occurred to me to use foam sheets, or any other materials. You've given me more ideas how I might put together such a map, with far less effort, and time! Well done fantastic idea. Could open up a whole new way to do hex crawls in RPG's!

I've run a few battles of a civil war, but I ended up dictating the terrain, and locales of the battles. I've wanted to be able to give the players on each side, a list of resources to husband, as well as perform map movement, to allow them to determine where, and when, they would meet for battle, without me just declaring it for them. This type of map could allow such movement, and resource husbandry, for the players to direct themselves. This could prove quite useful! Cheers!

For stability, I would recommend gluing the foam base sheet to foamcore, or corrugated cardboard (cheap, or free). Will aid in usage as well, by making it stiffer during handling. Cheers!

Thanks for all the positive feedback and I'm happy that this will inspire others to embark on their own 3D maps.

I should have a river map sample done this weekend and I blog about that "adventure".

Eric
You may be right about mounting it all to foam core. I'll just have to see.

I can also see this being very useful for RPG type adventures.

You could take photos of each, and shrink them down to 25% then you'd have a strategic level map (be sure to label or number them).

They'd be perfect for 3mm modern gaming.

Yes, Mako11, these would be great for Pico armor. I was also toying with the idea of using them for World at War (WWIII game) scenarios.
