Skirmish Campaigns is proud to announce the release its newest line of scenario books called Great Captains Campaigns. These books will focus on warfare in the gunpowder age.

The first book, authored by veteran scenario book author Tim Tilson, covers the fighting in western Germany in the Seven Years War. Entitled Ferdinand of Brunswick, it has 10 action packed scenarios. The book is available only on line as a pdf from Wargames Vault for $15. USD Tim has authored other scenario books including: Colonial Campaigns Maximillian in Mexico, Colonial Campaigns The Sikh Wars and Skirmish Elite Falaise Firestorm.

The scenarios are designed to be played in an evening, i.e. three or less hours with a limited number of figures. For example, sixteen is the maximum number of French battalions needed. Victory is determined by Victory Points, as each commander strives to accomplish what his historical predecessor did with the unit available. There is no "point system" or generic Army morale"'.

The scenarios fall into one of three types:

-Small entire battles such as Sandershausen and Mehr where all the units can be represented. .

-Portions of large battles such as the dawn flank attack at Hastenback or the late afternoon attack at Vellinghausen, where a discrete attack can be separated from a larger battle.

-A selectively reduced portion of a larger battle. For example the Crown Prince's attack at Krefleld with 12 battalions in lieu of the 18 actually present.

The scenarios are:

-Hastenback, July 26, 1757; The dawn attack on the Allied left flank.

-Krefeld June 23, 1758; The Crown Prince's attack on the Allied left flank.

-Sanderhausen July 23, 1758; The complete battle.

-Mehr August 5, 1758; The complete battle.

-Lutterberg October 10, 1758; The Franco-Saxon attack on the Allied left flank.

-Bergen April 13, 1759; The Allied 10:00 O'clock attack.

-Warburg July 31, 1760; The French counter attack on the Crown Prince's flanking force.

-Kloster Kamp October 16, 1760; The Crown Prince's dawn attack.

-Vellinghausen July 16, 1761; The French late afternoon attack on the Allied camp.

-Wilhelmsthal, June 24, 1762; The Allied attack on left wing of the French army.

Each scenario was play tested four times by a variety of gaming groups. The games can be played using any battalion level 18th Century set of rules. The scenarios were designed for 15mm figures but can be played with 25mm figures by expanding the board.

Tim is at work on Volume II which will feature scenarios from the War of the Polish Succession, the War of the Austrian Succession and the Jacobite rebellion.

Sounds most interesting. Will you get a full order of battle, specifying which individual regiments were present, in each scenario I wonder, or will it just be the overall number of battalions, squadrons and guns.

That is great news Tim! I have your Maximillian book already. This one will be added shortly.

I have been interested in getting into SYW. This sounds like a great opportunity to try various rule sets with a small number or figures.

I really like the attempt to show how to use the scenarios amongst various rules sets. Scenarios should work with any rules sets as long as there is an OB provided for the scope of the scenario being set up. This volume seems to meet those requirements and then some. Well done! looking forward for more.

FWIW, I am doing SYW in multiple scales from 6mm thru 28mm, with 10mm being my focus du jour.

Tim Tilson: Any chance FIW is on the to do list ?

Tim Tilson29 Aug 2015 3:57 a.m. PST

Regarding OBs. The OBs for the scenarios are only for that portion of the battle being gamed. For example in the Hastenbeck scenario, the French have only three brigades and two unassigned grenadier battalions. The OB will say:

Brigade Commander (name if known)
3 x Infantry Battalions (name if known)

Regarding Emsdorf. It was not included as it was too small. There were only six battalions of infantry per side with some cavalry. It might make a good starter intro game for a set of rules but didn't see this as being useful for a game at a club when you might have five –seven guys wanting to play.

Regarding FIW. Probably not in the foreseeable future.
