Does any one have a source for these? Or do I need to sub in Little Birds?

GeoffQRF27 Aug 2015 7:51 a.m. PST

I have a 1/100 one on my desk somewhere

Check out Fabbri 1/00 on ebay, or look for the Battlefront one.

I have a couple of 1/100 plastic kits at home that I got from Ebay. I think that they were made by Entex, but not positive. They do show up on Ebay from time to time.

@Jarrovian: no BF Kiowa helo, yet.

Strange that none of the majors have made an OH58 in 1/100 scale yet, I would have figured that would be perfect for the Battle Rotor or Easy Kit series!

I have a civilian version that is some odd scale like 1/96 or 1/92. Will check this eve.

Might be able to find a toy one you can repaint, in about the right scale too, e.g. perhaps Maisto, etc..

If so, let us know.

@Darkest Star: Probably 1/96, which is 1/8" to the foot. Unless it's box scale (whatever size fits inside the box). But please check and see if you can find the maker, I need at least one Kiowa for Team Yankee.

I found a very simple 1:100 OH-58 kit by a company called Pocketpak.

The one i have is by ACE and is 1/92. It's already half converted for Vietnam use, gotta get back to it. Annoyingly, they also did a 60'a era Hughes 500 (OH-6A) but it is at 1.85. Bleeped text so of scale is THAT?!?!?

Jemima Fawr, can you please dig up a link for that model, my googlefu is apparently weak today…

werwulf23 Nov 2016 6:22 p.m. PST

It's just the Entex 1/100 OH-58

Just saw this .. I have the ACE models above ;

The OH58 says it is the odd scale of 1/92 … but if you wanted to squeeze in a Flashpoint Minis or Peter Pig pilot figures intended for the 1;100 Huey models (for examples) you'll be cutting him right down to get him inside.
The doorgunners work better.
It would be fine to use on the table .. even a bit small looking relative to the bigger 15mm figures.

The OH6a model again says it is 1/85 or something like this . But again .. if you want to add pilots and doorgunners you'll be cutting them down to fit.. not as much as above.
It looks just fine on the table , these are WIP shots from the OH6 model I made a while ago. The doorgunner is a converted Battlefront 'M113 rider' figure with headswap , the pilot is from Peter Pig .

For close to 1/100, the Entex or Hasegawa COIN Series box scale models are the closest as mentioned above but it's the Vietnam era bird with short legs. The Hasegawa (ACE is apparently the same model) is much nicer than the Entex:

In 1/144, you have a very expensive model from Triple Nuts or the Minifigs metal one (in their 12mm modern range).

If all you need is a small helicopter to fly over the table, the Furuta gashapon OH-58 is actually pretty nice but it's closer to 1/200 and it's a D model.

Its too bad there aren't any HO 1/87 scale OH-58s or Bell 206 helicopters. I vaguely remember Roco making one.

worj0108 Jan 2017 10:26 a.m. PST

Just did some checking in my stash.

Note: OH-58D IRL length is 32' 2" per Wikipedia and other sources. That's about 9804mm. Not 100% sure if that's from nose to top of fin or to end of fuselage (just beyond the tail rotor) so my comments below may vary by a few percent one way or the other.

Entex Pocketpack OH-58a (picture in previous post) is 83mm-85mm long (depending on where on the tail you measure to). That puts it at about 1/116 scale, + or -. (Stated scale is 1/100)

Ace Bell 206 Jetranger (referred to by Darkest Star Games above) is about 103-105mm long, or approximately 1/95 scale (stated scale is 1/92).

Hot Wings Bell 206 Jetranger "Police" is 113 – 115mm long, or approximately 1/87 scale (no stated scale on the blister pack). This one requires the most rework to make a gaming mini out of it because it's got some significant seams but it may be the easiest to get (I got mine at Toys R Us for $5 USD or so).

My money's on the Ace kit for gaming where I care about the scale being the same as that of my ground troops. If it's just a spotter that *should* look a bit smaller (e.g. more akin to fixed wing a/c than helis that might touch ground), Entex works for me…

BTW – if you compare most of the UH-1Bs and Ds, and AH-1s available to us (Roco, Tamiya, Revell, Aoshima, BF, etc.) to prototype lengths, you'll find the same sort of scale variation. Does it matter? To me, not so much, as long as I can squeeze a door gunner into the thing without making my butchery look too obvious… ;-)
