I just received a War and Empire "Carthaginian Starter Set", by Forged In Battle. I bought it used, but it was a sealed box.

The web site says it's supposed to have:
1x General (Hannibal)
12x Carthaginian Heavy Cavalry (from WE-CA01)
64x Carthaginian Unarmoured African Foot (from WE-CA02)
16x Carthaginian Libyan Skirmishers (from WE-CA04)
12x Carthaginian Balearic Slingers (from WE-CA04)

Instead, what I got is:
1x General (Hannibal)
27x Celtic Warriors (WE-GA05)
74x Carthaginian Unarmoured African Foot (from WE-CA02)
20x Carthaginian Libyan Skirmishers (from WE-CA04)
14x Carthaginian Balearic Slingers (from WE-CA04)

The mistake is obvious: the bag with the Celtic foot was labeled with a hand-written "CA1", so I'm a victim of an honest human error. While I'm happy to get a look at the W&E Celtic Warriors and I will be able to make use of them, I need the Punic horse a lot more. Now I have to order it separately, and I am left wondering what will actually be in the box when it arrives from England…

Aside from all that, it's hard to complain about getting so many extra figures. I've never seen that before.

I have to say the figures are really nice. The proportions are excellent, the detail is superb, and the variety of poses in some packs is incredible. In the bag of Celtic Warriors there is only one repeated pose I can spot. One! That means I got 26 unique poses in a single bag. Now I wish I needed more Celts, because I'm going to have to buy a bunch more of these, and then my childish surplus of Celts will become a wretched excess. The Libyan and Balearic skirmishers also have a wide variety of poses (6 and 4, respectively). The spearmen of the "Carthaginian Unarmoured African Foot" are the exception; there's only one pose, and it's a little odd for men who should be standing in a phalanx together:

The metal is typical of today's white metals: it crackles a bit when bending it, and it's brittle and a bit hard. Re-truing spears is about as likely to break them off as straighten them. There is some flash, but it's all stringers and occasional spikes, no mold lines I can spot. The shields on the unarmored African spearmen are separate, and each has a small spike of flash on the edge that will have to be sanded off.

Overall I'm happy with this range of figures. The price is a bit high, but they're good figures, so I'm now planning to flesh out my Punic and Macedonian Wars armies with them.

The backers got extra figures in the bags, and agree they're an excellent range. Loving their Punic Romans at the moment.

Hi all,
I just bought their Early Achaemenid army second hand (excellent figures). No problem as I had bought some of their packs already (missed the Kikckstarter).
Along with the army I got a bag of assorted generals, released free to kickstarter members.
Porus and Darius are obvious, but I'm having trouble identifying some of the others. Can someone point me to some labelled illustrations of these please?, or can someone identify the figures by their description, if I were to post them?
Many thanks

In days gone by OG15s quantities were often greater than nominated, probably because they were 'ladelled' into the bags by weight. When they were first released around 1990 it wasn't unusual to receive 120 or 130 figures in a bag nominally containing 100.

They look good, and are tempting, but expencive.

They are about the same price as Victrix plastic.

Also those army boxes and starter sets are kinda odd.

Why dosen't the later starter and army packs of Persians have Sparabaras?

I also feel you dont' get that much for your money.

The full on imperial macednonian pack, you get enough phalangites for 1 big unit (48 figures)

In the end of a box close to £90.00 GBP you get 2 units of infantry, 2 light infantry/skirmishers, and 3 cavalry units. the price 48p pr figure. And they don't even suply spears!

What am I missing? bulk deals should be a good deal, they are not cheaper then buying single packs, they dosn't supply spears(hell they don't even have spears on their site, simply says (we recomend piano wire,)

If you are going to call a starter army,

You need atleast 4 units of close order heavy infantry, 3 of light/skirmishes, and 4 cav. Sell that for £100.00 GBP and supply wire spears. And it would be a great deal.

Does it work now?

Bellbottom29 Aug 2015 3:28 a.m. PST

@ Gunfreak
It worked the first time.
I don't considers them expensive at 12 Cavalry or 24 Infantry , including command figs, and a seriously range of figure poses, for about £10.00 GBP
This is not too much more than the £3.00 GBP or so for comparable packs of 4 Cavalry or 8 infantry from other manufacturers.
I agree the light infantry mixes are sometimes numerically weird, the Sparabara lack bowcases/bows, as do the later Achaemenid Guard cavalry, and there are no armoured bowman or Immortals in campaign dress.
Having said that the sculpts are excellent, and I have bought quite a few of the Persians. I would have bought other armies, and might still buy the odd unit, were I not hugely overstocked with painted 15mm Ancient armies.
I hope they go on to do either a Biblical armies or an Imperial armies kickstarter.
I suggest you find a unit you like from their range, buy it, and then pass judgement, although I do agree about the contents of the starter armies. I suppose it gives you a steady army core to expand upon.

Thanks, and it still only says 5 posts for me. And it doesn't get bumped, with new posts.
