As the jeep was replaced, so will the venerable Humvee. Meet the new Oshkosh Light (Combat Tactical)-All Terrain Vehicle (L-ATV): link

It is advertised as mine-resistant. How that translates into the vehicle design is anyone's guess based on this picture. |

Based on how high it rides, I would be surprised if it didnt incorporate a V-hull. Besides, they say that it incorporates MRAP design, so something is done with the hull to resist IEDs & mines. |

Does it come in AF Blue? (In my day we had cast off Commandos) |

The next model will feature thicker armour, a bigger gun, mount a missile launcher in case it bumps into enemy AFV's and the model after that will add reactive armour and a fully automated gun turret but at the expense of two seats and most of the cargo capacity but it will be able to take on MBT's. At that point someone will figure out a light 4x4 vehicle will be an ideal for driving around and we'll be back to the Willys jeep … |

I'm with Patrick – the Humvee is meant to be basically an armoured truck. This looks much more like a combat vehicle. Another waste of resources. |

It looks like an armored 'pick up truck'. |

No, the Humvee was never meant to be an armored truck. just a 4x4, non-combat-area 2.5t truck to haul stuff with. Well, some of them got armored, the ones assigned to base security for "sensitive locations". But the original HMMWV design spec was for an unarmored 4x4 truck with a 5000lb cargo capacity. The MRAPs were obscenely heavy. The Oshkosh M-ATV weighed in at 30,000lbs. The L-ATV is less than half that weight, 14,000lbs. Still heavy, but much more mobile than the MRAPs. There's only so much you can do to reduce the weight before you start running into problems surviving underbody explosions. @Ogden: yeah, the design spec included armor and a 5000lb cargo capacity. |

Lion- the point I was struggling to make was that the Humvee was meant to be a utility vehicle rather than an APC…. |

I don't think this is a waste of resources. This would seem to fit the requirement for a fast patrol/reaction/whatever vehicle where there is a good chance of hostile ambush. The like of which the humvees have experienced on innumerable occasions. But with a better chance of survivability. |

@Stu: And yet COIN warfare has shown that all the vehicles assigned to the "sharp end" need to have some level of armor protection. Humvees still have their place in the American arsenal: Here in the US, and in places like Europe where the locals are not shooting or blowing up American soldiers constantly. [edit] Oh, yeah. Who is going to be the first to market with a 15mm or 1/100 scale model? Rebel already has the MATVs, but the LATVs are smaller. Geoff? ArmiesArmy? |

I'm seeing a lot of light armored jeep vehicles getting pumped out by every Western nation. I just hope that we're not still manufacturing equipment for the LAST war. These look useful for carrying out invasions of A-stan to fight insurgents. If things continue to heat up in Europe, we'll be needing next-generation Bradleys to fight well-equiped mechanized forces, not high sided MRAPs. |

There is no "non-combat" area where we (US) tend to send our armed forces nowadays. Every vehicle needs some protection from mines or IED's or its just a casualty factory. |

So the Army still doesn't like referring to anything essentially an armored car as an armored car. |
