It appears we will be sending F-22s to Europe, in order to send a message to Russia over Ukraine, and their occupation of Crimea: link People in the military are now openly discussing the threat Russia poses to other nations in the region, especially given some of their recent rhetoric. While I believe the show of strength is a good one, I'm not so sure that the F-22s should be sent, since that will give the Russians the opportunity to calibrate their radars against the stealth fighter, in order to better detect it. Seems to me that it might be better to send other older, but still very capable fighters instead, like the late model F-15s. I'd rather keep the F-22s stealth capabilities as a surprise, should they be needed during wartime. I guess on the plus side, those hypothetical Russian fighter vs. F-22 engagements will gain a bit more credibility. 1/300th, or 1/600th scale miniatures, and C21 rules. In C21, versus stealth aircraft, you only have a 10% chance of radar detection per turn. |

In C21, when the F-22 launches a missile or drops a bomb, does it automatically show on all radar, at least until the attack is over and the plane closes its internal bay? |

I don't believe that issue is addressed in the rules. Given that the launch should happen in just a couple of seconds, my guess would be no, but I do see your point. At the speeds they're moving in just a few seconds, I suspect it wouldn't matter anyway, except to make opponents aware there is something out there, somewhere, but in a 3-D environment, other than general awareness, it probably doesn't matter anyway. I guess the flipside of the argument is you might be able to cue your IRSTs to that section of the sky, to help with the search, if it wasn't being covered there, already. A particularly nasty trick is to use one fighter to go active with radar, giving away it's position, while another slips in silently, and invisibly as the "shooter" to launch missiles at the enemy, from data acquired via datalink, and from a closer range, and very different area of the sky. Get two pairs of jets, widely separated from one another in the sky doing that, in alternating salvoes vs. opponents, and let the mayhem ensue. They won't know what hit them. Even if they do have time to figure it out, they probably won't be able to deal with the outcome, effectively. Of course now, both sides can play that game, so the first to do so, or the stealthiest, probably get the upper hand, especially with AWACS support. |

With the hefty price tag … you just can't leave them in the box … you have to take them out and play with them … |

IIRC, F-22s are in the Pacific (Japan or one of those island airbases or both) already, so I think at least some potential opponents have had chances to get reads on them. |

You're assuming that the F22s have been flying fully dark, instead of with RCS-increasing things attached and/or operating. I do not believe that's a safe assumption. |

Or if it rains and damages the RAM you get a +1 to detect on radar. |

Yea, I was thinking that perhaps they might be attaching some little radar reflectors, and/or popping some small flaps on them, to possibly dirty them up a bit, just for grins. |
